Chapter 3
“But boss. What do you mean by collecting? I'm just an ordinary college student.”
“Do you want to leave town? Or be buried in it?” Donghae asked, not that it was really a question. Of course Hyukjae didn't want to die. So he earnestly agreed, thought the comments of the others didn't do much for his confidence.
“Ah... Hyukjae. Poor you. How did you end up on his bad side?”
Hyukjae was worried. 'Crap' he thought in his mind. 'If these people are worried then that means the guy I'm collecting from must be a real thug.'
Later on that day Hyukjae visited the place where the borrower lived. He was surprised at the building. It was just a small old store. He thought to himself how such a place could owe so much? The debt was 300 million won. With that he could pay 12 years rent, buy 20,000 textbooks, etc. A whole lot of money he thought.
He knocked on the door and went in. He introduced himself as someone from Saehan Credit Union. The workers immediately panicked and the boss started apologising, giving excuses of how even though he's working hard, the business isn't doing well so he doesn't have the money. And how for the past few months, he's had to feed his children on ramen. He was pretty much begging Hyukjae for more time, and how he would even sell everything he owns to pay back the loan. Hyukjae thought that the man seemed sincere and honest, and even though flashbacks of Donghae's threats flashed through his mind, Hyukjae agreed to give the man more time.
“You have until the end of the month, okay?”
The said man rejoiced and thanked Hyukjae. He even offered Hyukjae to join them for dinner. Being poor himself, of course Hyukjae didn't refuse. He left satisfied after feeling that he had helped someone.
When he arrived at the office, Donghae was not best pleased.
“Things didn't go as planned, boss.” Hyukjae said scared.
“Tsk, tsk. He got you. I knew you'd fall for his lies. Have it your way. As long as I get to personally bury you.”
'Eh?' Hyukjae though. 'This man must be crazy'.
The end of the month had finally arrived but the man apologised to no end, as he hadn't got the money. He bowed the full 90° and even got on his hands and knees, begging for one more week. Hyukjae returned to the office. After seeing Donghae, Donghae nonchalantly said “Siwon, go find a good burial spot. A trash dump will do nicely.”
A week later... “Please! Two more weeks. Otherwise my family and I will have to commit suicide!”
Hyukjae returned to the office... “Kangin, have a casket made” Donghae called out. Hyukjae had been running in a cycle of work, essays, chores, tests, collecting. One day Sungmin talked to him in the office.
“Idiot. I can see your still as gullible as ever.”
However, Hyukjae was too stressed out to hear and was lost in his own world, mumbling.
Sungmin continued. “Can't you see he's just a con artist. He's just refusing to pay even though he was the money. He's been acting poor so he could....”
Sungmin stopped as Hyukjae just walked straight past him. “Idiot...” Sungmin whispered as he watched Hyukjae leave.
Hyukjae had come back to the man's store again. He was just too tired with all this and sighed. He was about to go in when he heard them talking.
“... It's about 1 billion won. 10 years ago I had made my wife and in-laws my beneficiaries. All I have to do is declare bankruptcy and I'm set!”
“What if those people flat-out deny any legal responsibility?”
“They don't have the balls. See? Even the “scary” mafia can't touch me.”
“It's not that they can't touch you. They're just feeling sorry for your ass. Even the toughest goon instinctively won't harm those who beg and grovel.”
“Anyways, they sent an idiot this time. I got lucky~”
As soon as that was said, Hyukjae slid open the door in a very menacing manner. “You've got 3 days to settle your assets. If you don't come up with the money and deliver it to our office. Then you can plead for mercy from inside a coffin!”
The people were scared... Hyukjae's face could have literally killed them.
Hyukjae stormed back into the office and went to Donghae's desk. “You'll get your money in 3 days, boss. I promise”. Donghae looked at him a little puzzled. Hyukjae then stormed of cursing in his mind, 'argh! Those people. How could they? Making a fool out of me and laughing behind my back.'
3 days later... Hyukjae was sitting on a sofa waiting for the man to come. 'Come on already! When I get through, you'll beg to give me the money'. Hyukjae was alerted at the sound of the door creaking but it was only Sungmin. “Where is everyone, why are you alone?” He asked. “Oh they went to go make their rounds.” Hyukjae replied. “Hm...” Sungmin sat down and Hyukjae thought that this was rather awkward.
“I heard you said you'll have the money by today. I just hope you're prepared to leave town.” Sungmin said cooly, but with a hint of concern. “No, wait. I wonder if they had already preapred a coffin.” He joked.
“Does the boss treat you well?” Hyukjae asked, totally ignoring what Sungmin had said previously. They looked at each other. “At least he's no dirty slut like someone I know.” Answered Sungmin. “Besides he's rich, handsome. And has a fantastic body. What's there to complain about?” He added smugly. Sungmin turned around to look at Hyukjae and was blinded by the light radiating out of him.
“Does he really have such a fantastic body~?” Hyukjae asked in a fangirl mode, eyes wide and twinkingly.
'Argh! Die you prick!' Sungmin mentally punched Hyukjae sky high. “You shameless sex-crazed dog!” Sungmin stormed off, irritated. “Well, I'm glad.” Hyukjae said before Sungmin had left the room. Sungmin turned around to see that Hyukjae was smiling at him with one those heart warming smiles, that made him fall in love with him before. Sungmin turned back around facing the door, slightly flushed and thinking to himself 'sometimes you can be so thick hyukkie.'
As Sungmin was about to open the door, it clicked open. “What? Who are you?” Sungmin asked confused.
“Ah. I hope you've brought the money.” Hyukjae said.
The man replied. “I brought 'something' alright.” Then pulled out a knife he was hiding in his jacket. He then tried to swipe Sungmin with it, but he dodged and fell on the floor. “Sungmin!” Hyukjae shouted.
“How dare some thug like you try to derail my master plan? I've been working on it for 10 years already! If I'm going to go down, then I'm taking you with me!”
'Oh my God!' Hyukjae screamed in his mind. Then the man proceeded to attack Hyukjae with the knife. He was very good at dodging and tried to remain calm. “Holy.” Hyukjae gasped as he was nearly cut by the man. “I said... Calm down!” And he managed to hit the man. The man flew on the floor. “Did you just hit me?!” He shouted. Then he turned and was Sungmin next to him. He then tried to attack Sungmin with the knife, but Hyukjae quickly got in the way. “Sungmin!” In the process Hyukjae got cut by the knife. “Ah. I'm ok. It ain't serious.” He reassured Sungmin. “You old fart!” Sungmin screamed at the man.
Just at that moment, Donghae and the rest of his men returned.
“Sirs~!” Hyukjae shouted out in relief. 'Boy am I happy to see you guys' he thought.
“What's all the commotion?” Donghae asked.
“Damn it!” The man spat out. “Take this-” He then ran to attack Donghae. “Boss!” They all screamed out. 'Ker-krack' the sound of Donghae landing a single mighty punch on the man. The man flew across the room and hit a table. Hyukjae looked on in disblief at how Donghae could diffuse the situation with a single punch.
All the men stared ominously at the man on the floor. “you don't have the money, eh?” “N-no, I'll pay up.” “With what? Didn't you say business was slow? There's a good solution for your situation, and it's called 'organ sales'” The man gasped. “It looks like you'll have to sell your entire family to pay the 300 million won.” Siwon teasingly said. “Oh lord~! I'll pay you right this minute. Please have mercy!” The man grovelled. “You'll have to compensate our boy as well, for cutting him.” Siwon added. “Yes, yes. Of course!”
After a visit to the hospital to get his hand bandaged he went back to the office. “Haha. How can I put it... that was rather easy” Hyukjae half-heartedly joked. “Leave it to the big bros, Hyukjae.” Siwon said to him. “Thank you sirs.” Hyukjae replied. “Well this certainly worked out.” “Either way, we'll be able to recover the money on time.” The men talked amongst themselves.
Hyukjae turned to Donghae. “Boss, I don't have to leave town any more, right?” Hyukjae asked with a pleading face. Donghae puffed out smoke from his cigarette “Yeah... but you won't be paid.”
'What the?! You cheap bastard!' His mind thought. “Heh. Still, I'm relieved.” He said happily out loud. “Good for you, Hyukjae.” “Yeah, we thought we wouldn't get the money.” “See you again!” Some of the men said as they left. Donghae looked on slightly annoyed. 'What's got their panties in a bind? Do they think that kid's their slave or something?' 'What a strange punk...' He said to himself, as he watched a very cheerful Hyukjae mingle with the others.
