Ten Ways To Sing Their Song

Spoilers up to the end of the series. Warning for overdosed references. Enjoy !

#2 Bread (Floe/Mastiff) - First Steps

Yun was watching Floe and Mastiff talking in the dining hall. Floe was smiling broadly and couldn’t stop talking, whereas the boy was eating calmly, without taking his eyes off her.

A soldier and a sybilla, sitting in front of each other, speaking together, if it wasn’t for Floe’s inexhaustible capacity to speak on anything and everything. Something unthinkable for many people.

They were both oblivious to what was going on, she thought, but it was fine as long as they had time to spend with each other.

Sharing food with a stranger was the first step.

#91 Vengeance (Neviril) - Two Faces of the Moon

Neviril didn’t like this mission at all. First of all, as a sybilla she shouldn’t have to do “missions”, even if these times of war. The Simoun were too powerful to be simply used as air carriers for soldiers. She felt as she betrayed them, even if the feeling made no sense.

She didn’t like their behavior either. They were arrogant, selfish and vulgar. They used the Messis as their own ship.

But most of all she didn’t like their thirst for blood. Those men were only driven by vengeance, and she couldn’t understand them.

#60 Tangle (Aaeru/Neviril) - Morning Routine

‘You hair is a mess. How can you do your hair each morning if its always tangled up like that ?’

‘I’ll show you if you comb my hair before.’ Aaeru answered with a smile.

Neviril sighed, but she wasn’t irritated ; she loved to bury her hands in Aaeru’s soft and lush hair. She began to work on the little knots, undoing them one by one.

When her hair was entirely smoothed, she said : ‘Now show me.’

But Aaeru turned, and kissed her.

‘Later.’

She made them both fall on the bed.

‘Let’s tangle them up again.’

#50 Parallel (Neviril/Amuria and Neviril/Aaeru) - Two Sides of the same Coin

Both had come to her because she was the best sybilla of the best Chor. Both had used her as a stepping stone to a higher, much higher goal. They even had the same reflection in their eyes - an image of themselves, eternal, ageless.

Both had pushed her beyond her boundaries. She would never had attempted the Emerald Ri Maajon if she hadn’t asked for. Perhaps she would have never flown again if she hadn’t constantly been buggering her.

Yet her heart had chosen, and she had to follow its advice. And she opened her arms to Aaeru.

#78 Birthday (Morinas/Wapourif) - At Least It’s Colorful

‘Can you feel her ?’ she asked to her daughter.

‘Yes, she’s moving...’ she looked up at Morinas, her large eyes thoughtful. ‘When will she be here ? I want to play with her.’

‘In two or three weeks.’

‘This early ? But the bedroom isn’t ready yet and...’ Wapourif exclaimed. He gave the room a panicked look.

Morinas took his hand in her own, gently calming him down.

‘Don’t worry, it will be ready for the birthday.’

She looked at her little family. The future wasn’t bright, but it didn’t matter, as long as they were together.

#88 Fight (General) - The Pass

They looked down to the city. From the sky, the Simoun’s shadows were almost embracing the fire.

They could feel the painful warmth rising to reach them, even with the well-insulated windows. They could hear the cries of citizens and soldiers, all mixed in a piercing lament.

They couldn’t tell if they had done the right thing or not, they couldn’t even see the real extent of the damages with the dense smoke.

This was war, much real than they had ever experienced. This was the soldiers’ war, and they didn’t want to fight this way.

#66 Emotion (Kaimu/Alti) - Disharmony

Now she could remember Rimone’s words : ‘If you love your Pair, drawing the Ri Maajon will be easier.’

And if you hated her, then you couldn’t control the Simoun anymore. She knew the idea of flying with Alti was doomed from the start, so why did they had to try ?

She could hear Alti trying to stabilize the Simoun, without any effect. They were carried away like a feather in the wind. They were going to die, because her sister couldn’t have find another moment to talk about this night.

Really, it was all Alti’s fault.

#71 Cold (Paraietta/Neviril) - Powerless

One by one, they have disappeared in the stormy sky.

When the rain began to fall, she didn’t felt it at first. She stayed on the observation deck, ready to welcome the sybillae when they would come back. But they haven’t, and the sky was darker and darker.

The rain was falling hard when she saw Neviril fly away too, without being able to stop her. Everybody left the deck, as she stood motionless, wishing for the sky to give her back the one she loved.

The rain was still falling on her, and she felt the coldness.

#96 Mouse (General) - Opportunities

‘Hiiiiiiiiiii !’

‘Floe ?’

‘A mouse !’

In a matter of seconds, they were all on their bed, trying to see where the little rodent, and, more importantly, if it was going their way or not.

Even Yun was afraid and looked everywhere to search the mouse. But the damn animal was nowhere to be seen.

Aaeru was the only one who looked at her friends and not at the floor, and she was really amused by the whole scene.

When Mamiina entered the room to find them on their bed wearing desperate faces, she knew it was going to be amusing too.

#7 Babble (Morinas and Errif) - A Baby’s Name

‘It’s really a beautiful baby.’

‘Isn’t it ? My husband didn’t want to me to show her to you.’

‘Why ? I’m not dangerous !’

‘He fears that I won’t be coming home if I stay here too long.’

Errif looked at her, unsure if she was kidding or not, but she was grinning.

‘You didn’t change.’

‘I did. But some things don’t.’

The baby began to move in Morinas’ arms, clapping her hands and babbling joyfully.

‘What’s her name ?’

‘Aaeru.’

‘Aaeru ? What a strange name. What does it mean ?’

‘The higher form of love.’

#82 Dawn (Floef) - Dawn of a New Day

His skin didn’t feel any different. He looked down at his body, unsure of what he would find. Were his boobs a little smaller ? He looked in the mirror, two times to be sure. No. Nothing had changed at all.

Yesterday he was female, and now he was male. And yet the transformation was invisible.

He wasn’t a sybilla anymore, couldn’t fly the Simoun anymore. He knew it, but it was hard to believe, when he still knew by heart how to pilot it.

He looked at the rising sun. This new dawn seemed full of promises.
