holding out for a hero 'til the morning light

Aww, that's a classy guy: Josh Duhamel Returns to All My Children.

In other soap news, we've all seen the Katie Couric/ABC affiliates stuff, yes? Is it time to start planning our wishlist for stories/retcons/returns to help GH go off the air with a modicum of dignity? Is dignity even possible at this point?

Now for some long, ramble-y answers to leobrat's five questions. Be warned, MASSIVE TL;DR AHOY.

1. What is your favorite sort of music to write to (or inspire you) and what in particular is helping drive your BB?
Oy, I'm like the only fic writer in history to not get particularly inspired by music? Honestly, I get distracted when I listen to music when I write. I am, however, trying to come up with a few songs that relate to my characters and story. So far, I've got "Almost Here" by Delta Goodrem and Brian McFadden (for the Pippa/Alex relationship as it nears its end) and "Holding Out For a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler (it screams "PIPPA!" to me, lol).

2. Best GH memory
This is going to make me seem like a total ghoul, but Stone's death scene. I'd only started watching GH that summer but was immeidately wrapped up in the Robin/Stone/AIDS storyline, which makes it not only my first soap story, but also the first time I was really aware of the bad things that happen in the world. When Stone died, I LOST IT. Like, wailing and crying and gasping for breath, so much so that my mom actually ran into my room because she thought I was hurt. When she saw I was just watching a soap opera, she sighed and left me in peace.

I know this all sounds dumb, but that GH moment sums up why I love soaps so much and why I think they're still important: even after only watching a few months, I was invested enough in the characters to be devestated by a death, the story evoked such a visceral reaction from me which is rarely the case in other genres/mediums, and the whole thing was something that my mother understood, because she watches soaps too and knows how they can hit you in the gut. Emotions that cross generations. What other entertainment or artisitc medium can do that?

3. Favorite love story of all time
I've been wracking my brain on this one. I don't usually read or watching things for romance, so in my head I don't really have a indexing category for love stories. That said, it's got to be John Crichton/Aeryn Sun from Farscape. It was the episode "The Locket" that sealed it for me. This is a love that spans galaxies, time, and empires, and one that not even death can defeat.

4. Which time in history do you wish you had lived in, and it must be over 100 years ago.
Curses! I totally would have said the 1960s, lol. It would kind of suck to be a woman at most times in history, unless you had money and education. So maybe if I could come from a moneyed family in Renaissance Italy, that'd be cool. The Age of Enlightenment would also be fun, especially if I could host salons and speak with the great thinkers of the time. Yes, definitely the Age of Enlightenment/Age of Reason.

5. You are given 5 million dollars but you cannot keep it or spend it on yourself. In other words; you are given it to start or donate greatly to a charity foundation. What is your cause?
Hee, this is an easy one. I'd start a nonprofit dedicated to early intervention in gender-based violence. GBV, and especially domestic violence, are my personal rallying causes. But so much of the resources dedicated to the problem are crisis intervention or case management. And that's all well and good, but it's getting to the problem long after it's become a problem. So I'd use the money to invest in targeted childhood education programs that teach respect, nonviolence, and equality well before the relationship years begin. Instilling those values in kids before they're given a chance to repeat any cycles of violence in their own lives would go a long way towards creating a new generation of people who don't approach their relationships through a lens of power and control over another human being.

That, or I'd give it to shelters to spend on healthy, nutritious food that might otherwise not be in their budget. Speaking from experience, it is just wrong how many nights a week the shelter I worked in served hotdogs, hamburgers, ham and pinepple, and green beans, all from a can.

Sorry for all the tl;dr, but YOU ASKED.

So, anyone who made it this far want to play?
