No sense of history at all. None.

PAYNE: It is tragic. I don’t think something like this will happen again. Don’t think that the people in Bangladesh who perished didn’t want or need those jobs, as well. I know we like to victimize everyone in this country, particularly when it comes to for-profit motivation, which is being assaulted. But, you know, it is a tragedy but I think it is a stretch, an amazing stretch, to sort of try to pin this on Walmart but, of course, the unions in this country are desperate.

Excuse me first: if you die or injured in a fire: you are a victim.

Excuse me second: Everyone who doesn't know why this is a horrific digusting callous repeat of history, should stop everything and read at least one, maybe three of the following links, please:

Mr Payne, owners of that factory, et al :

Do not even mention that this was an overseas factory. Bullshit. These were people in Bangladesh. Their bodies were consumed because of the same greed and ignorance as with the businessmen in New York, one hundred and one years ago. The Bangladeshis and the Triangle fire victims are now bonded in the same awful pain and misery of a death by fire. For similar reasons, a century and cultures and countries apart.

Regulations and building rules and workplace rules were set up, and in part, because of the awful incident in 1911. It doesn't stop at any border. The same rules apply. Or should, could.

Fire engulfs the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors of the Asch Building, occupied by the Triangle Waist Company, causing the death of 146 workers.

Summary from the Cornell site:

The call to fire stations goes out at 4:45pm. Firemen rush to the scene but are unable to save workers trapped by locked doors or unable to negotiate doors opening inward. Many jump to their deaths or perish inside the burning building. The firemen's ladders do not reach above the 6th floor, nor do the water hoses. The nets are insufficient to blunt the workers' fall. Others perish in the collapse of the fire escape ladder, which does not reach the ground. The public outcry over the tragedy mounts, fueled by rumors that the doors were locked and by a sense that owners' greed prevented the adoption of basic fire and safety measures.

When the bosses were brought to trial, among the witnesses called were those who had worked near the locked door. I was one of them. In response to questions of judges and lawyer., (including Jacob Panken) I replied:

"In the morning, when we were going up to work, both elevators (front and back) would be operating. But on leaving, only the one in the back was allowed to run. This was because the company directed a watchman to search the girls' pocketbooks, in which we used to carry our lunches. As the bosses wanted to save the expense of having another watchman at the front, they allowed only one exit to be used for all three floors.

"We considered it to be the greatest insult to have to open our pocketbooks and show that we weren't stealing anything. The bosses lawyers said this was necessary because the workers brought along these pocketbooks with the intention of slipping out some "waists.

"I retorted, heatedly, that they should be ashamed of spreading such slanders. The fact was that, even if the workers had wanted to steal anything, it would have been impossible, because when bundles of work were distributed, every item was counted and listed on the tickets. And when the work was completed, everything was counted again.

As you can see, there are scores of sources for information on this and there is no excuse for this journalist or anybody else for that matter to not make the connection between the mostly young women- mostly Jewish and Italian-- with the Pakistanis that suffered an all too similar fate.
