Things I learned about last night: in some parts of Romania an apparently ficititious country the guy who gave the talk I went to made up, there's a folk belief that if you're walking through a forest and see a blue light, you should stop and dig under it, because there will be treasure.

Things rubynye has linked to this morning: NASA's The Universe Is ( Read more... )

Eeek. I went to a talk by a historian who was really into folklore, but I guess he's just misinformed and or misciting? Will edit, sorry.

ok, so um. i went on research and indeed there are beliefs about treasures in romania that sound like what your historian said

Basically there is a belief that in the nights of big celebrations (easter, christmas, new year etc) the "clean", unwitched and uncursed treasures are burning. to find the places where the money is "dancing" or "bathing" (there's a belief the money , the coins are doing a dance) people were very attentive in the hope that they would see the "flames without heat", of blue color, that treasures have. The best time to find them are these nights of the big (and holy) celebrations. It was widely believed only few treasures could be found and from these, very few could be unearthed since they were witched, bound, unclean or given to the devil.

heh

Oops, sorry, I thought I had replied to this. /o\

That's pretty much what he came out with - I think he mentioned it being quite a region-specific superstition, so perhaps that's why you hadn't heard about it before?

The fic is mostly just about dead people now anyway.
