He was out of clean clothes. So, yeah, he could have just washed some, but he’d left some at Mom’s house when he’d moved into the dorms, and it wasn’t that far away. So that was why he was letting himself in quietly early in the morning.
Of course he’d forgotten about the dog, who rushed up at him, barking excitedly. He picked up the little rat quickly, trying to shush him. “Come on, Mr. Muggles. We don’t want to wake up Mom.”
“You should have been more worried about waking me up.”
Lyle nearly had a heart attack, whirling towards the stairs at the voice. “Who the fuck…” His voice trailed off as he realized the strange woman was holding a shotgun. What the fuck?
She lowered the gun, chuckling. “Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?”
He scowled. “Ok, who the fuck are you, and what are you doing in my house?”
“Kid, you moved out. It’s not your house any more.” She was still laughing, and hadn’t answered his question. He took a step forward, and she raised a hand. “I’m a… friend… of your mother’s. She asked me to stay with her for a bit.”
Lyle frowned, something in that catching his attention. A slight pause when she labeled herself. The same pause he gave when introducing his boyfriends to people. He gaped. No. Hell no. She couldn’t be… could she? “Friend?” he repeated weakly.
“Yeah, friend. But you can call me Victoria. You’d be Lyle, right?”
“Uh, right.” He watched her move with confidence to make a pot of coffee. Like she owned the place. He couldn’t believe it, but… “Are you fucking my Mom?”
“None of your business.” Victoria didn’t look at him as she grabbed a pair of mugs from the cupboard. “Does she know you’re gay?”
“What?” Lyle almost yelped. “How did you…”
“I didn’t. Until now.” Victoria turned and grinned. “So, how about we stop asking personal questions?”
“Yeah. Fine.” Lyle wasn’t sure if he liked this woman.
But some part of him wanted to.
