I got my Californian driver's license yesterday - thank goodness. I was so very nervous before the test. I left work an hour early to get a bit of practice in (apparently most experienced international drivers usually take a few lessons before they attempt the test - oops). During my practice drive, I completely focussed and concentrated like it was the real test ... and almost had two major accidents on the way to the testing centre. The first was as I was pulling out of the carpark at Uni; the other car had to slam it's breaks on (yes, there was even a squealing of tyres) to avoid hitting me. The second incident occurred at traffic lights just outside the testing centre. I was stopped behind another car at a red light. Eventually he moved off through the lights, so I followed him. There was a bright flash of a red light camera, and when I looked up I realised that we'd both legged it through a red light - a car turning left into our lane had to slam it's breaks on. Once again, tyres squealed. So as you can imagine, I was pretty shaken up by the time I went to take the actual test. But the guy who was testing me was cool, and proclaimed, "God DAMN, I love Aussies!" at the beginning of the test, so it was all uphill from there. Afterwards he told me that I had provided him with "a tale to tell around the dinner table that night", but I didn't quite know what he meant. Perhaps it was in reference to my continual cussing the whole test, and my other comments which seemed to amuse him no end (but were said in all seriousness, such as "Tessa, don't hit that car. Tessa, that cyclist deserves to live" etc). Anyway, I passed so at least now I won't have to lug my passport around everywhere for ID. Celebrations ensued last night at Delta's of Venus. My head hurts.
... and now I'm off to my first ever American Football game - GO AGGIES!!
