New Caledonia was brilliant but exhausting. I still had some residual jet-lag from Europe, and working from 7am to 8pm each day didn't help.
The guy that I was working with was fascinating and inspiring and lovely - words can't describe how interesting and knowledgeable he was, so I'm not even going to try. He took me and the head of the research institute out for a sail on Saturday (he's French though has lived aboard his boat in Noumea with his family for 10 years). On Sunday, we had a picnic in a picturesque mountainous area with greenery and streams. We got on very well, and spent the whole time chatting about his time sailing the world, working with Vietnamese refugees, living in South America, working in the Pacific ...
Meeting him made me realise how little I know about the world, how much I wish to learn, and how I need to more actively pursue knowledge and experience. It's due time for some significant changes. I hope moving to California in a few weeks will help.
