Joubert's Principle
Close to finishing watching the Clannad set. I really like the dub, despite the fact that there were a few seiyuus I would just switch it over for. I'll just repost what I mentioned at the AOD forums plus a bit. If I need to critic something it would come down to these:
1) David Matranga's Tomoya. Seriously if I was doing casting, I'm not sure if I'll put him in the short-list, but heck, I'm no casting director. Anyway, I'm used to the badasses he's played, but it took a bit of getting used to and that's helped by the ADV 5cm dub. He does hit all the right timings with his jokes, and have quite the range of emotion, which fits the "image" of Tomoya well. In the end though I was rather pleased with the performance if anything else. Oh and use a woman's voice to do a younger Tomoya.
2) Shelley C-Black's Kyou. That's just yeah... the performance is top-notch no doubt, but it took me a lot longer to get used to. Her voice just doesn't fit the image of Kyou on first appearance, but I can see where this would lead though later on in the series.
3) The jokes/manzai routines. In the Kotomi storyline, there's a whole thing about getting timings right, and how Kotomi needs to have a strong comeback. Somehow, it just got lost in translation. Now I know everyone hates the Southern Accent = Kansai-ben, but being so used to the stereotype, I was expecting the same in the dub, but alas, it just felt so dry with a direct translation of the lines. And I'm also partial to Mamiko Noto's deadpan kansai accent. :P
Here's hoping for After Story to be dubbed as well. I'm rather optimistic about it.
Onwards to more anime from Sentai, I've put in a preorder for Hell Girl S2 sets (Mamiko Noto BANZAI!), Legend of the Dark King (Fist of the North Star!) on Blu-ray and X'amd on Blu-ray as well. That's me sorted for September.
