just scored a mid century modern knock off from craiglist for $5.

It's been painted black and will need a repaint, but is perfect size for my house with it's little rooms.

question is, which of the 3 living rooms should it go into?

I'm itching to rearrange the upstairs den again. But I think everyone is sick of me doing that.

Yowch. I can see the cuffs hurting.

I have a sewing machine in table from my grandmother, she bought it in the late 50's and it has the original metal cuffs at the bottoms of the legs. This table I bought today is partially wood and partially not, but $5. Meh. The cuffs are not sized right, they're too big to pass for mid century modern so I'm afraid to put it in the room with the sewing machine. One is odd looking under the paint, I'm afraid it might be patched so if I repaint I'll probably not dig to hard on the cuffs. But we'll see. I might get adventurous.

Yes the corner dilemma was the stupid negative space. For now when I make the bed (rarely) I have a ton of pillows I stack to make it less obvious. I still need something there. I've seen people use the screes and pull it off. I've also thought about a plant but I don't want one too fakey looking.

Yeah our old stuff is sturdy, but sometimes the scale is just too far off to go with other unmatched pieces. I dream of bedroom furniture for us (kids are covered) and a living room set.

So three living rooms works like this: It's a 1958 house right? So the front room is 30 feet long or something. One end is a dinning room, the other 2/3's is a living room area. I found a sectional on the side of the road and put it in there. (Low back, fits the space nicely.) Directly behind that room is the kitchen and a smaller den. In there we have a futon, my desk/computer, and swivel rocker thing. well, and the coffee table, which is violating the 3ft rule as I sit at my computer. (And ok, that irks me.) This room is just hard, there's two doorways going out that are AGAINST the corners of the room (so the wall between can't have anything thicker than a bookcase on it because it messes up the flow of traffic) then there's a closet also on one wall, across the room from that is the cut out to the kitchen with a built in bookcase below, and the 4th wall has the rooms only vent and windows. ::palm face::

It's a freakin' square hall is wtf it is.

Then the previous owners took out the built-ins that surrounded the window (judging from all the pencil marks in the thick paneling) and finished a room in the basement directly below this room. Then they stuck them in that room. Which is painful, because the window would have had a bench seat which is now under a tiny window you can't see out of and upstairs is a weird gap of space. Can't move the built-ins back up because they hacked out a section of the top molding and put HVAC duct for the room upstairs through it.

(this is getting long, sorry.)

The downstairs room has Derek's computer (built-ins have a desk in them) and our TV and the same freaking two door ways going out into other rooms but I gave up and put my drafting table in that less used flow of traffic. Also two random swivel chairs that use to be upstairs until we pulled the futon up here.

So. Three really badly laid out living rooms. Nice. Only the front room clicks with furniture in it. The other two have so many doors and weird features they feel like mistakes.

it's a good thing i'm unemployed right now, or i wouldnt have time to read novels like this :)

i think you can stick new table and sewing machine table in the same room - scale may be bit off, but they're still the same idea.

pillows are a good distraction, have you thought about putting some sort of lamp back there - it could act as a reading lamp, replacing the nightstand lights, maybe.

dual purpose room = best idea, esp. since it is super long. that one sounds like it's pretty wrapped up. in the den, i agree about the 3 ft rule - it's hard with the walls being so occupied by doors and whatnot, but mostly it sounds like you've done what you can. that sucks about the built-ins - could you move them and just replace the molding? even if you have to replace it all, it could help that area make sense, maybe. . . you could have the desk in the built-ins, and your desk could go downstairs for his computer.

you guys seems to have a fondness for swivel chairs.

we each had furniture from our apartments, so we had 2 of everything, basically. stupidly, when i was in college i decided to use some student loan money to buy some furniture. so i had an ent. center, a couch, a mid-70's console stereo, the bed, and some other smaller pieces. when she got out of college her mom and dad bought her an "apartment gift" which was a new couch. she used christmas money one year to buy a big comfortable chair, and she's had this ridiculously huge oak bedroom set since highschool (painted white) she also had an entertainment center. when we first moved in we bought a bar-height table and chairs for the dining room/eat in kitchen area. with the exception of my entertainment center, all of my stuff ended up downstairs, and her stuff fills the upstairs.

i feel you about the poor room arrangement. our house was built in the early 80's - your basic split level - 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bath. the "basement" is 1/2 garage and the previous owners finished the rest, so that's where my stuff lives. upstairs we've got the living room, kitchen/dining, and all the bedrooms. one extra bedroom is an office (where i spend most of my time) and the other is the guest room. our LR is only able to work 1 way, and it's very awkward. and in order to use the wii fit, we have to move like 3 pieces of furniture.

i'm currently (for the last 2 years) working on a desk for the office - a way to house both our computers, the printer, and all the other crap, but still be able to have room in here for my drafting table. i've always wanted to try my hand at making a bed (for the guest room) but i'm scared - so my next project is a built in shoe/stuff cabinet that will fit under the stairs by the garage. then i'm thinking of some bookcases for all the combined books - those will live downstairs with everything else.

everything takes time, but just keep switching stuff until you find something that works right. it keeps your mind busy, it's good exercise, and you never know till you try it. i know rearranges a lot - usually he doesnt listen to me, but it's his house, i just visit it.
