So yeah-
I had my packaging design class today and HOLY CRAP I am so excited...our teacher is new to the school and he runs a design firm here in PA that does nothing but packaging. He showed us some examples of stuff they've done and daaammmmnnn....they've done some great stuff. He brought in the mock ups and finals of things like Twizzler packaging, stuff for Hershey, Ice Breakers mints, and a ton of others. We all brought in examples of what we thought was great packaging design and so I had with me a mini Belvedeer Vodka bottle (frosted glass!!), a bag from Urban Outfitters, and the awesome Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner bottles. We're going to be redesigning Cloverfield fruit punch cartons and since we have to research how our product would look on the shelf next to the other cartons in a grocery store we're gonna have to go take pictures without getting escorted out. I know someone who works at Giant so I'm good on that- but it's funny that his employees have been asked to leave stores even when photographing their own designs. Anyways- we learned a lot of weird stuff - like why there's so much extra room in bags of chips (it makes you feel ripped off when you open them but its all about keeping the chips inside from breaking) and also why there's extra room in packages of mints or candy that are in hard containers. As for the mints- it's all about the sound the packages make when shaken.
Someone brought up Pepsi's new logo - it's been talked about in all of our classes but this time it was really relevant. Some of us like it but the majority of us think it's stupid.
Check out the differences in logo design for each of the cans-
It's interesting how the smile gets bigger for the one's with more caffeine...hmmm. It's also interesting how they didn't follow the main rule of logo design- that it should remain consistent. But then again- how many people are going to care about that.
