Congratulations, Saladin Ahmed, Nebula Nominee!

Norilana Books proudly congratulates our author Saladin Ahmed, whose story "Hooves and the Hovel of Abdel Jameela" from Clockwork Phoenix 2: More Tales of Beauty and Strangeness, is now a Finalist for the 2009 Nebula Awards in the short story category. Saladin's tremendous achievement is truly remarkable, considering that this is his second published story in the genre. He's a dynamic newcomer at the start of an extremely promising career, and we're honored to have given his award-nominated story its first home.

We would also like to congratulate our fabulously talented and hard working editor (and Nebula-Nominated author in his own right) Mike Allen who edits the critically-acclaimed Clockwork Phoenix anthology series, for discovering Saladin's story and selecting it for the much-acclaimed second volume of this anthology.

We wish to express our gratitude to all the members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America who found Saladin's story deserving of this honor.

Norilana Books strives to set a high standard for quality of fiction, and to continue our tradition of publishing award-caliber work. Our Nebula Award Nominees last year were Mary Rosenblum's novelette "Night Wind" from Lace and Blade edited by Deborah J. Ross and publisher Vera Nazarian's own novella The Duke in His Castle.

Here is what editor Mike Allen says:
"Part of what delights me personally about this nomination -- and I hope I can be forgiven for a dash of editorial hubris -- is that though "Hooves" is now a contender for a major award, it is not the standout piece in Clockwork Phoenix 2; rather, the level of craftsmanship Saladin brought to his story is typical of the quality and creativity that all of the writers included in this anthology brought to the table, as evidenced by the fact that several other stories in the book also received Nebula nominations. I'm proud of all my contributors, and feel they bolstered the ever-accumulating proof that in the realms of science fiction and fantasy, even in the small press, even in books available only through online sellers, exciting things are happening."

In the meantime, congratulations to all the nominees, including Norilana author Eugie Foster whose novelette "Sinner, Baker, Fabulist, Priest; Red Mask, Black Mask, Gentleman, Beast," is a Nebula Finalist, and Norilana author and Clockwork Phoenix 2 contributor Catherynne M. Valente, whose YA novel The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, originally published chapter by chapter on the Internet, is now a Finalist for the Andre Norton Award, a major achievement in so many ways.

Best of luck to Saladin and all the rest of the nominees. The Nebula winners will be announced on May 15, 2010 in Florida.
