"...Rand's setting is modern Las Vegas, and his mode is something like horror threaded with wry humor, and a more covert element of fantasy. Even before one portentous death occurs, with peculiar consequences, this is Sin City, and newly fledged hotel-casino-restaurant owner Mark Trane wants to acknowledge it. To the dismay of the more self-righteous locals, he names his venture Hell, with paint jobs and room names to match. It's a quixotic gesture from a self-made billionaire who's portly, lisping, and very much in touch with his inner child. ('Maybe God played dice. Maybe other rich people played God. All Mark Trane wanted to do was play.')..."
