An E-Book Case Study - 3.000 Freebies and One Sale!

Nov 12, 2010 20:29

I just had to post this, because it is partially amusing, and it partially illustrates the roots of my (and other writers') financial problems.

Remember how this summer I made the Dreams of the Compass Rose e-book a free download for 90 days?

And, remember how it then reverted to $7.99 full retail price on September 15th?

Well, you might get a giggle out of this, but after 3,016 free downloads (whole units or partial samples) of the e-book at Smashwords, only ONE person, TODAY, for the FIRST TIME, actually BOUGHT a copy of the e-book and paid retail price money for it.

*grin*

If you are reading here, YOU, One Kind Person who bought my book, please know I appreciate it very much! THANK YOU! :-)

Now, I know the original intent of this free offering exercise was to increase readership, and that's fine. It certainly worked! :-)

For that I am glad, and not really all that surprised (after all, the novel is not "new," is a "classic," and has been originally published nearly a decade ago), but Lord, does it demonstrate how difficult it is to actually make money in publishing!

*grin*
