As far a short-discounting -- unfortunately the alternative is exorbitantly high retail prices. Especially when many of our titles are hefty books, almost as a rule 300+ pages and frequently over 500 pages long (which raises print cost and hence retail on its own, and narrows all margins).
Right now I set a 40% discount, but Ingram take a large chunk of it before passing it on to the wholesaler, and that is what causes the short discount.
Now... I am going to be doing an experiment however, and raising both discounts and prices on some of the forthcoming titles, to see how that plays out.
In this economy, a high retail price is a scary turnoff to the customer, and especially since one cannot rely on the bookstores to carry any given book at any discount rate anyway, it becomes an extra risk.
