Musings on #Amazonfail

Apr 13, 2009 05:14

I'm beginning to suspect more and more that this #Amazonfail disaster is a complex combination of abuse of automated tagging database rules on the Amazon backend (as perpetrated by some independent group eager to remove "morally objectionable" material), clueless Amazon reps who gave robot-dumb answers to angry customers citing company policy in regard to adult material that was interpreted incorrectly, and finally, possibly a weird business monopoly move by Amazon, partially based on some interest or lobby group that has some actual influence on their actual business practices and is putting pressure on them.

Mitch Wagner has a very reasonable explanation, and advises not to jump to conclusions (I now tend to agree).

I expect this will quickly blow over (if Amazon doesn't want to lose the bulk of its customer base). This timing is atrocious of course, since I am about to release a major lesbian and gay title from Norilana.

In addition, I've been observing the rankings of the two Norilana editions of the Kama Sutra (see below) and the rankings seem to be there, but at one point I distinctly remember both disappearing.

A big hmmmmmmmm.
