My Family Is: (an exercise in definition)

Nov 04, 2009 15:38

I want you all to play along with me here. I begin to think my definition of family is wrong when we continue to allow discrimination in any form, so I want to play a game. I want to see if your definition of family and mine are the same.

My family is NOT:

Not limited to blood relations (there are friends in this world i would go to any lengths for if they needed me, even sacrificing my own life for)
Not easily grouped by one trait. We aren't all redheads or blue eyed.
We don't all pray in the same churches. Some don't pray at all, and some do it out in the wild.
We don't all agree on everything, and most of us won't agree on any one thing either. But we respect each others right to our opinions.
Not bound by legal definitions. Not every family is undivorced with children under 18. Some have never been married and have kids.
Not all of us have health insurance or life insurance, or any protection at all.

My family IS:

There for each other without question, from the best to the worst without hesitation.
There to comfort, to join in revelry with, and to weep and bleed with when the time comes.
Supportive, caring and consistently so.
Varied, diverse, and strong because of it, there is always someone in the family with a needed talent. And we give them freely to each other.
Loving, in the truest, most unconditional of ways.
Comprised of 'friends' as some would call them. Friends are someone you have a drink with, not someone you have bled with.
Here for the whole of lifes trials, not just the good times.
Separated over vast distances, but still united.

Who am I? I am someone you all know, and all of you should know by now what family means to me. My family is made up of every single race, religion and economic status. If my definition of family is wrong, please let me know.
