Summary: Denmark realizes he hasn’t gotten Norway a birthday present, and Norway could care less, but is touched by the gesture nonetheless.
It wasn’t his fault.
At least, that was what Denmark told himself as he strolled down the busy road of the market.
There was much to be done, and between ruling and keeping Sweden in check, he was busy.
It was not a good excuse for forgetting. The Dane had forgotten, and now he was stressed, with less than a week to find something to get for Norway’s birthday. He didn’t mean to forget, and surely the Norwegian would have not cared much either way had he not remembered.
It just stung a bit that it took Iceland clinging onto his leg and asking him what he was doing for his elder brother’s birthday.
Denmark said it was a secret.
Iceland called him a liar.
The Dane mulled over what he should get as he strolled through a shop, looking over small trinkets and gifts. He had no idea what to get, simply because Norway never truly expressed a need for anything towards him (except on the rare occasion when he’d voice his need for sex). He sighed, running a hand through his hair as he considered a few options. A ring? No, they’d all gotten one at the start of the Union. Another hairpin? Nah, Norway had plenty of those. A new weapon? Pointless, considering that the only weapon he used would be his mace- and those were rare moments.
Denmark really felt like the idiot the Norwegian always claimed he was.
He went home, hoping that a new day might bring him an answer to his problems.

He eventually came to the conclusion that a book might be the best type of gift for Norway- after all, books were supposed to be as timeless as they themselves. And considering that he did seem to like books, it couldn’t possibly be that hard of a gift to get.
The Dane realized the problem in that shortly after he had arrived at a shop- the Norwegian already had a rather extensive collection of books at home; how was he supposed to choose something and not worry if he already had the book? And how would he know if it would be something Norway would actually enjoy reading?
As he looked over the display with a bit of dismay at what he was going to get, something caught his attention from the corner of his eyes. It took him a few minutes for it to click why it had seemed so familiar, before he remembered the Norwegian looking over the item forlornly looking over it, but knowing that he could not get one all the same, as it wasn’t in his budget.
Denmark took no time at all getting the attention of the shop keeper, and was soon on his way home with his gift for Norway and his pouch significantly lighter.

“You got me a gift.” Norway says plainly, eyebrow raised upon having a bundle pushed into his hands, the only explanation he got being a brief, “Tillykke med fødselsdagen” from the Dane.
“Of course I did! Now, open it, open it.” He says anxiously, hoping that the Norwegian would like it (and not be too upset with him for it). He received an annoyed look from the blond, but he had compiled, carefully removing the paper and string that wrapped the small box. There was a few moments of silence, aside from the sound of rustling paper, as he retrieved the present, fingering the object, and then he spoke up.
“I hope you at least got some kind of discount on this. You even went as far as to get an engraving done on this thing.” He said, holding the pendant up to his eye to get a better look at it.
“Nope.” The Dane was interrupted by a groan from the other, but ignored it and continued on speaking. “I knew you wanted it, so I got it. It at least matches your clothes.” The Norwegian rolled his eyes at this comment as he placed the gift aside.
“Well, the thought is appreciated. Takk, Dan.” Norway eventually settles on saying, leaning up to kiss the Dane’s cheek in a rare display of affection.
“Anything for you, min kære. Put it on, I want to see.” Denmark prompted him with a wide smile, the Norwegian grudgingly agreeing as he undid the latch of the pendent and pulled it on. He eyed him for a brief moment before nodding, pulling Norway back down beside him.
“Tillykke til dig.” He murmured after a few moments as they laid down, whispering sweet nothings to the other in the comfort of the bed.
