Author's Note: So, this is going to be a pretty long fic about how Jacob and Edward's relationship evolved from when they meet in the 1930's to present day, each of them trying to work with cards that life has dealt them. Basically, them trying to make things line up and work out so they get their happy ending - somehow together.

“I hope you live a life you’re proud of. And if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.”

----

Life is a series of events, a set of links joined to create an intricate and not always perfect pattern; some sections are abandoned while others continue on. The best a person can hope for is that in the last moments of their life, they are able to look back and be proud of what they had accomplished.

The date is January 8th, 2006 and Edward Cullen is 82-years-old. Alice jokes that he’ll live to be well past one hundred, “You’ll be 104 before you know it, Edward!”

Sometimes, he believes her but the thought of living to be a century old is somewhat chilling. He remembers times during his youth when there was talk of coloured television and flying cars in the new millennium; his grandson Anthony now plays video games on a 50” LCD screen but Edward has yet to see a flying car, dammit. Every now and then he catches himself going on about “the good old days” with his brother, Emmett, who still collects muscle cars and remember the days when hunting bears wasn’t such a touchy subject, but he tries to look toward the future now instead of the past. It’s been a hard journey but he’s learned that if you keep dwelling on your past demons, you’ll never have the strength to live a life worth living.

It’s been seven years, and three days, since his death but Edward is eternally thankful to Jacob Black for teaching him that.

Every year on the 5th of January the whole family visits the small grave in the cemetery outside La Push, Washington. The whole extended family - Rob and Nessie, their children Anthony and Rebecca, Jacob’s wife Leah, Jacob’s cousins Sam and Embry with families, and the in-laws; Alice, Emmett and his wife, and himself - would come with flowers and stories to show respect. They’d talk about the last year, bicker within themselves. Sometimes it would feel like Jacob was with them laughing at one thing or another.

Three days later, Edward always comes back alone. It’s a huge change in the dynamic of their relationship -- when Jacob was alive, Edward would be the one doing most of the listening. One of the many things he misses about their conversations was the sarcastic quips and playful teasing the younger man would always add.

Sometimes, he talks about how the kids and grandkids are doing. Once, five years back, he had to explain to a woman that had walked by during such as talk that he did not mean that their kids were “their” kids - simply that he and Jacob Ephraim Black were related by the marriage of their children. The woman had seemed disappointed and at one point in time, Edward believed he had been too.

This year is different. This year he has a different story to tell Jacob.
