Only Lovers Left Alive

Recommended. It did not supplant Let the Right One In as my favorite vampire movie - in fact, I'm not sure I'd watch it again, but that's entirely because of my own issues with the sister plot (more on that below), not because the movie wasn't lovely. Deeply atmospheric and moody, I just loved seeing these characters together, and feeling the comfortable and still passionate way they fit together.

The sister, while I recognize was a catalyst as far as the story went, made me cringe (as intended). I find that kind of character, who stirs up trouble and doesn't care, who pretends not to notice, who asks why it's such a big deal, god, _mom,_ drives me up a fucking wall. That's perfectly intended, I just tend to avoid films that make me want to tear my hair out.

I enjoyed watching them together, and felt for Eve as she tried to pull Adam out of his depression (and wished he'd snap out of it, but everything felt so lived-in that I liked it anyway). The line "I know what I'm going to do. I'm going to get you that gift." really made it for me - that even in the face of that, fuck it, here was a gift I promised you. Us is more important than this.

I quite liked the music, too (good, given), particularly the song near the end. Might track that one down for myself.

All in all: Slow, strange film which I quite recommend. 4 stars.
