Dining Month 2015: 3 Doors Down Cafe

Mar 27, 2015 08:23

We tried to hit North Light last night, but their hood vent had died, so the kitchen was closed. Alas. But this one was on my list as well, so it's not a real loss.

First course:
* Eggplant and Parmesan rollatini - Yum! I don't know that I would have figured out this was eggplant, but it was certainly delicious. Came topped with some arugula and some pesto-y, very green sauce that was very good. I grabbed the last bite of this one (though mostly because I was suuuuuper nice and let Heather have the last bite of the next one.

* Panko-crusted potato croquettes with raclette fondue - it was mashed potatoes, fried, with fondue cheese. Also known as heaven.

* Salad of bibb lettuce, smoked bacon, chives and creamy garlic dressing - Very good salad (bib lettuce is a new love from dining month this year. Note to self), though kinda paled compared to the other two.

Second course:
* Creamy macaroni and cheese with house-made fettuccine, creamy fontina cheese sauce, roasted squash and radicchio - Came to the table bubbling hot, in a ginormous portion. The addition of the radicchio, brussels sprouts, and squash was a nice bitter note (and a bit of a break in the really rich cheesiness). This was agreed to be the winner across the table.

* Coq au vin: Red wine-braised chicken with mushrooms, cipollini onions, lardons and potatoes - wasn't really coq a vin, if you want to get picky, but was tender and good chicken. Good, but not great, and not what I'd order if I went back outside of dining month.

Third course:
* Fudge brownie with house-made ice cream of the day - ice cream of the day was a spicy cinnamon, which had a lovely burn in the back of one's throat. I'm not a bit cinnamon fan, but the ice cream was good in a red hot candy kind of way. Definitely glad it came with a brownie, though the brownie paled against Laughing Oak Bakery's brownies, as I fear all future brownies will.

* Café au lait pot de crème - Very coffee-y, but still sweet. Better than I expected to find it, given my dislike of coffee. I would have liked it a bit less bitter, but I still think it was the winning dessert for me. If you like coffee anything more bitter and less light than coffee ice cream, I think you'd like this one.

Other:
* Tangerine Dream (vodka, hiram walker tangerine liqueur, tangerine juice, cardamom bitters, splash of apolloni sparkling) - Honestly just mostly tasted like sour mix to me. Ok, but not great.

* Amaretto Sour - OOF. Too sweet for me, but Heather loved it.

* House Red - good!

Thumbs up, and another one to add to the list in the future.
