I always joked, even when I lived back east, that the west coast was always home. And it's true - even though I never lived in the Portland area previously, it feels more home-like than New England. Except on days like this.
I was glad I was there on Monday, in a weird way. Leaving aside that it was nice to see some people, it was a relief to see Boston, and to see that the city was ok. When you're far away, all you have is the news, and that can be harder - which was very clear today.
Watching social media was weirdly fascinating, and I found it easier to deal with than the news. Finally, the afternoon rolled around and I had to go pick up some surprise fruit trees (aside: I goddamn love my new neighborhood-to-be, that it has things like surprise fruit trees).
It was good to get out of the house (and away from the internet) and work with my hands. It had rained earlier, and the ground was rich and smelled wonderful and was full of worms. I am so excited to have a garden. I have a new apricot tree, as well as what is probably another apple tree (though may possibly be a pear - it's hard to tell when they're this small).
I think I picked out where I want to build my house. Also had a nice talk with the contractor. Things are starting to move, and it's very exciting. And then I got news that it was over in Boston, and I felt like I could breathe deeply again, and have had Sweet Caroline stuck in my head. Boston's not home, but it's more than I thought it was. <3 you, Boston.
