The Road

The other post-apocalyptic movie that came out around that time: The Road. All I knew about this was "Guy and his son wander the very grey wasteland." All you need to know is, "Guy and his son wander the very grey wasteland and try to avoid cannibals."

Because there are a lot of cannibals )

Yeah, sadly the movie (though about 2 hours long) didn't seem to have time for subtly. The Man went pretty quickly from "shooting a guy to save my kid" to "catching the guy who stole our stuff, and taking all of his clothes and shoes, too, while my kid begs me not to do it and I snarl in a feral way, and leaving said man [played by Omar from the Wire] to die in the cold." There are a few voiceovers, but that's not too bad. It's just a rapid plunge into yes, we got it, drastic times, drastic measures, man's capacity for cruelty SHUT UP land.

I have not read the book, though it makes me happy to hear it wasn't so mean to dead horses. Would you recommend it?

Does the book explain what caused the end of the world? Because I actually *hate* post-apocalyptic stories that don't at least hint at a reason. If you don't give a reason, you've conveniently allowed yourself to make up any kind of world you want, without worrying about consistency. It might be good Literature, but it's shitty science fiction. (Which is probably fine with Cormac McCarthy, but it's not so fine with me. :) )

(I am being totally lazy here, btw, because I know I'm never ever going to read the book. It will upset me too much.)

Well... cannibals are good though it sounds kinda grim.

Does it have a zombie apocalypse feel? Or are the cannibals more like a more human threat?
