I've been thinking alot about clothes recently...and food. Not in the way one might automatically assume I'm thinking about those two things, being female. Not considering diets or how to get into skinnier pants. I've been thinking about these two things because (ironically) these are two things I don't like thinking about on a daily basis. I am not a foodie or a fashionista - which is to say, these two things do not interest me in and of themselves. But I need some variety (my wardrobe and my cupboard are both boring me just now, which is why such a large portion of thought real estate is currently given to both these topics).
Unfortunately (and paradoxically and double-ironically) I do not want to dress, or eat, like a slob. Not a fan of fast food/junk food or eating at restaurants daily. I also borderline loathe jeans/sweats/fitness shoes. And I am falling out of love with knit tops. Not sweaters, but the almost ubiquitous flimsy, practically see-through material that's supposed to be lightweight and layerable, but I've found to be a) chilly and b) sweat-inducing because it doesn't actually breathe. And I have to wear another top under it because it's translucent, thus kind of negating it's usefulness as a cool summer fabric. Really - is there any point to these things at all? They're cheap, I guess...but because of the sweatiness they have to be laundered after practically a single wear and they kind of fall apart after not-too-many washings because the fabric is ridiculously flimsy...thus not being actually all that cheap in the long run. Oh, and because they are so often badly tailored they are not anywhere near as comfortable as they look.
I think it's all the synthetic fiber. Wool, cotton, linen and silk are all wonderful fibers, and are generally fairly long-lasting. They also appear to be vanishing from our wearables. Seriously - take a look at your label and I'll bet that a synthetic (like rayon or acrylic or polyester) makes up 40-80% of the garment. Which is ridiculous in a winter coat, as rayon is not anywhere near as warm as wool.
...
See what I mean? Possibly not. But I could fall down a similar rabbit hole in regards to food - what's cheap vs what's easy vs what does what food is supposed to do (i.e. give your body the stuff it needs to continue *you*), but this post is circular and tangential enough, really. I just need to sit down and figure out a shopping list and a day for long term cooking; b) figuring out some way to sew/recycle something interesting to wear. I don't need a lot...with good planning I can make quite a few outfits out of just a few garments.
Okay...done with the rambling now. No, really.
