“You’re a fucking idiot.”

A small sigh escaped his lips as he struggled to catch his breath, his eyes looking up tiredly at the ceiling. The vocalist had always had a rather blunt way of putting things. Maybe that was why it was so special when he sang in fragments of his thoughts, as if he were unsure of what he was really trying to say, something that he suspected was the real Kyo. That had been exactly what had pulled Kaoru so close to him. Now, of course, he was just being… well, truthful, actually.

“Yeah, yeah, I know. Can you drop it now? It’s not like I’m not paying for it already.” he grumbled, rolling over a bit to glance at the clock. Damn it. Was it really that late so soon? He could have sworn they still had a few more hours before they need to be at the concert hall.

“Yeah,” the smaller man behind him said, as he moved to sit up, “but I mean in general, you’re an idiot. You were the one with the weird rules, and when we finally found a loophole you’re willing to take, you pull this stunt. I mean, really-““I got it!” the guitarist interrupted, annoyed.

He gave an absolutely pitiful sound that made the blond snicker at him, and managed to roll himself of the bed and stumble into the shower. A part of him knew that the other would be in shortly, and that he would never be able to fend off his advances in his current state, but he honestly didn’t care. Kyo was right, he was an idiot. It had been years now, since he’d managed to get the two of them shit drunk enough to actually admit their feelings for one another and screw each other’s brains out. The following morning had been awkward, and it had taken the smaller man pinning him against the wall and using amazing creativity with his words to make him admit what was wrong. The fact was Kaoru got the heebie jeebies from sleeping with anyone more than a year younger than him.

Of course, admitting this to the blond had been horrifying. Admitting it to anyone was horrifying, but Kyo? Anything but that. But he’d always been full of surprises, and this had been no exception. There were a few skeptical looks thrown his way, but despite his scary exterior, the guitarist had a knack for looking downright pitiful. They spent the rest of the day trying to work around this little fact, and no matter how many times he said no, the other just kept it coming.

He’d succeeded, of course. Kaoru couldn’t say he’d been entirely surprised by that, considering who he was talking about. The only time of year Kyo wasn’t more than a year younger than him was on his birthday. Of course, the guitarist had opened his mouth to say something in protest, but closed it without uttering a word, and simply smiled.

So that was it. On day out of every year, that was all they got to be this close. Neither of them expected the other to be exclusive to him, how could they? Strangely enough, though, they were anyway. They simply didn’t want anyone else, and those brief 24 hours were always worth the wait, in his opinion.

A blast of cold air hit his back, and Kaoru could feel the steam escaping the small shower stall of the high class hotel they were staying at, making him shiver and smirk at the same time.  “Shut up, old man. I can hear that smile from here,” came the soft scoff of his lover. Warm arms wrapped around him, and Kaoru squirmed at the cold hands attached to them that played idly on his stomach for mere seconds, before they were right where they wanted to be; where they were craved. The guitarist couldn’t help pressing forward into those unnaturally soft hands, the one thing that had ever come off as even a little gay to him. “We don’t have much time,” he mumbled, and Kaoru found even he was quickly tiring of his voice.

Kyo had his own, special way of letting people know his thoughts. He somehow managed to spin his leader around and pin him against the cold tile wall without making either of them slip in the onslaught of water coming from the spout overhead. There was a fire in the other’s eyes, one that was always smoldering, but there, and it warned him now to be mindful of his words. “Well, if you don’t think you can make the deadline in time, maybe I’ll just have to do it for you.” Those words were all it took to send shivers running almost violently up his spine. Only twice had they ever actually switched positions, but even Kaoru had to admit the being at the mercy of the other man was worth any pain that came with it.

A smile was the vocalist’s only response. That smile was well welcomed, though, and it brought one of his own onto his face. In that smile was all the understanding either of them could ask for in this life, and they both knew it, both craved it. It was that smile that gave Kyo every answer he ever needed, and that same smile that called him forward, into Kaoru’s embrace, with thirty minutes to reach their destination.

----

The lights on stage were blinding and always overheated the band’s bodies to the point of exhaustion. They were pouring themselves out, just like any other night, all of them playing what they had written together at different times in their life, because that was what the fans wanted, even what they, themselves, wanted. If their ears weren’t focused on the music, they were overthrown by wave after wave of cheers, making it difficult to refocus. As far as he was concerned though, tonight, there were simply more important things to behold. Kyo, for example, standing there, singing his heart out, and casting hidden, brief glance to him as he rubbed over the ever-present bulge in his pants.

Oh, yes. Tonight, there would be more than just music to take his mind away. Right now, he had to pay the price for not paying closer attention, but later was always there, a later that seemed much more welcoming. Beyond that was much later, but that was something he was sure neither of them wanted to think about with time dwindling so quickly.

He would wait.

---

Time was ticking.

Kaoru’s watch had been left in the bathroom, a door shut against its alarm, and the standard clock by the bed had been long cast aside, shoved between the wall and the nightstand. Somehow, the gentle sound of the analog hands creeping along behind the glass surface still echoed through the hotel room like it was the only the there.

“I should have taken the batteries out of that damn thing.”

He snorted, his chest bouncing with his silent laugh. “It would’ve ticked anyway.” He reminded, earning a snarling sound in response.

“It’s your fault.” the other mumbled, and even though it was too dark to see, Kaoru knew that the smaller man was gritting his teeth, and probably giving himself a headache. The apology hung in the air without needing to be spoken, and it came from both sides.

And there it was. Ringing loudly came the alarm that marked the end.

With silent regret, he could feel Kyo moving away slowly, going to take a shower like he always did, as if he were afraid to keep the memories of what he couldn’t have for the next year on him. The guitarist knew that they would both try not to cry, and both succeed, but it was the guilt of the need that crushed him into the cooling mattress.

365 days to wait… sometimes wasn’t worth having morals.
