Job Fairs

Last week I received a phone call from a recruiter who had seen my resume posted online. He said that there were a few employers who would be interested in someone with my background and that I should come and meet them for an interview. He called back two more times to remind me about the time and the place. I thought this was going to be a great opportunity to meet potential employers. So i was all set with ten copies of my resume in hand ready to meet these employers and talk them into hiring me. When I showed up at the meeting place, there were about 200 people in line in front of me. So much for being a uniquely qualified candidate. I had been talked into attending a citywide job fair along with about 500 other unemployed New Yorkers. After speaking to some of the other people around me, I realized that we had all been conned by telemarketers who were paid to convince people to attend this fair. Additionally, the job fair was advertised in the newspaper. Can you imagine the commotion of that many people in a line to see FIVE potential employers with FIVE potential positions.

Talk about feeling like we're in a depression... standing in line with 500 unemployed workers for 2 hours in 12 degree weather vying all vying for the same 5 spots, none of which were offering more than 30K a year.

The highlight of my day was venting my frustration to a camera crew outside the job fair, which was making a documentary about lay-offs and unemployment in NY.  It'll be pretty funny if it ends up in some nationally screened movie. They probably got some good footage yesterday since everyone who left that fair was pretty much feeling the same as I was.
