I just got home from perhaps the strangest day of work I've ever had. It was truly surreal.
At midday when I was getting ready to take my lunch break three men dressed wearing nothing but boxer shorts covered in leaves came into the shop and started looking around at the furniture. Myself and my co-worker were standing behind the counter watching them with complete fascination as they sniffed the tables and dressers before one came over to ask as if we had anything made of sheep. When we revealed that, unfortunately, we didn't. They left calmly and, seemingly, disappointingly.
I think I ended up in the middle of some sort of performance art. Someone let me know if you see it on YouTube!
Then this afternoon when I was getting ready to come home a young man who comes in every now and then to browse the antiques came over to see me while I cleaned mirrors. The conversation, which I cannot promise is verbatim, went thusly:
He: Good afternoon. Been busy?
She: Not terribly so. I'm almost done for the day though!
He: I've been in here so many times and I've never caught your name before.
She: Adrina [she smiles politely]
He: Adrina. Beautiful name. I'm Liam. Adrina, I wanted to tell you that I've thought about what it would be like to be married to you.
[a short and confused pause went here]
She: Oh?
He: Yes, I've always thought that you would make a wonderful wife for me.
She: Um [an uncomfortable laugh] I don't think I'd be a very good wife really.
He: Oh, nonsense! You'll be great. Will you?
She: Will I?
He: Marry me?
She: Um, I really have to go now!
I then ran away and hid out the back until he finished browsing and went away. This was the strangest thing anyone has ever said to me in my entire life. I really hope Liam doesn't come back with a ring* Perhaps he wasn't serious and in league with the earlier Leaf Men in an attempt to make my day a fascinating study of human behaviour. One can only hope.
* Unless it's a REALLY nice ring. A girl must have standards.
