The (Woefully Incomplete) Post-DH Guide for the Sturdy Snape Slasher

Finished reading DH last night. Still haven't fully caught up on the two weeks of LJ I missed, but I got some idea of what's going on. Hence...

The (Woefully Incomplete) Post-DH Guide for the Sturdy Snape Slasher
I dunno about you, but my first reaction to several events in DH was to ponder how Snape slash can survive in light of the explosion of het and slaughter and cheese.

The Titanic 'ships

Case 1: the Snarry sector - ah, Egypt
So, Harry's terminally straight and marries his princess, and Snape has been carrying a torch for his mother all along. Well, until he DIED, that is. You'd think that'd kill any attempts to reconcile this 'ship with canon. And you'd be wrong.
* svartalfur's DH reaction from a Snarry fanboy POV, fandom meta, some further meta and fic links.
* snapetoy about the state of the fandom. A bold mix of denial and rationalization. Can't wait to see the fic.

Case 2: the Snupin ship - possibly not sunk after all?
I don't know about you guys, but even post-HBP, Snupin was pretty much canon for me. However, DH pretty much killed it in my book, and not because of both of them dying, or Lupin marrying Tonks. It's just that Remus and Tonks have a baby and you know what, I think that they were good for each other, once they sorted themselves out. Then she went and peed on my Marauders-era!Snupin with the Snilly. I guess I'll hang around near the pyramids, reading oldskool fic and ogling this and other pretties. For the more resilient of you, there are quite a few options.
* Meta: Discussion: Writing Snape/Lupin After Deathly Hallows || an amusingly succint reaction + more discussion in comments to OP || a surprisingly optimistic outlook.
* If you can still picture a DH-compliant Snupin ship, here are the first fic offerings: + || + || + || +.

Snape rarepairs FTW!!!!

Thankfully, there's plenty of wriggle-room left with the rare pairs, even if you want to keep it DH-compliant.
Some examples:
* The Snack. OotP didn't kill this 'ship, I don't see why DH should. Right? Right?????? Write!!!!!!
* Then you've got Snape with just about any Death Eater, or Voldemort - he'd do anything to obtain information, eh?
* Or young, confused Snape, in desperate need of TLC which his unrequited crush couldn't give him, but his Slytherin friends could.
* Snape would've done "anything" to get Dumbledore to save Lily, and DH was a pretty good indication for Dumbledore being both gay and manipulative.
* Or... Fred and Snape hooking up beyond the veil? How'bout that?
I could go on, but I'll spare you.

The non-Snape options...

If all else fails, adopt a new, non-Snape 'ship?
* the_ass_ship - Looks like it's gonna get epic. Oh fandom. What you can do with 0 canon interaction and almost no characterizations.
* grindeldore || dumblewald - On the other side of the scale, WHOA, this is the slashiest thing EVER. I mean, who'd've thunk that Dumbledore would be the most canonically gay character in the books?
* Somewhere out there, someone is writing Kreacher/Regulus.

PS - Not necessarily slash-related, for those of you who just need something else to read, here are a few suggestions, keeping with the fantasy/magic theme and aiming for, er, quality...

* Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell... A bit difficult to read at times and full of realistically unlikeable characters, but certainly bold, unique and interesting. The bonus is the deliciously Snape-like Childermass. The slash potential remains untapped (if it is, please point me to the fic, bubbies!).
* Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea trilogy tetralogy cycle, especially the first two books. Growing up and destiny and magic. tighter, better writing, deeper characters... IMHO, anyway.
* Janusz Korczak's Kajtuś The Wizard and King Matt the First. Beautiful, simple, with so much heart.
* Astrid Lindgren's The Brothers Lionheart (you *will* cry) and Ronja the Robber's Daughter (bestest most kickass girl growing up story ever).
* Richard Adams' Shardik - Sucky epilogue, much like DH, but oh, what a book. It's got the world inside of it.
* Stephen King's The Eyes of the Dragon - another childhood fave.

books, recs: books, snape, psa, slash
