Nakai Masahiro

He really is an interesting guy, isn't he? When I first met SMAP, I just saw him as the funny, always smiling, outspoken, simple boy. But the more I watch and observe him, the more I realize that Nakai Masahiro is one of the most complex human being in the world XD Not as simple as I originally thought.

~~ He seems to talk a lot but he actually doesn't say anything at all ~~

Because he always lie !!!!! He said he can't stand Goro-chan but he keeps talking and talking about Goro-chan to everyone else in almost any other shows when SMAP or Goro-chan is not around. Nakai-kun--- honestly, I don't think you really hate Goro-chan if you think about him that much.

He talks a lot but he hates talking about himself. When people praised him, he often deflects the praises by joking or downplays his own achievement by saying things like "it's just luck" or "it's because of the agency". Being humble is a good thing but sometimes it really feels like a lie that Nakai doesn't believe that HE really is the main reason for his and SMAP's success. After all, he must know that he has done so much for SMAP, probably a lot more so than what we know.

~~ He seems to be the easygoing guy but he actually is a smart, calculating, diligent type ~~

Who else would have thought of faking his own profile to make his "character" more interesting at the age of 16?

He was the 16-year-old boy who thought about bringing presents to senpais when they're first introduced and formed as SMAP. The 16-year-old boy who stepped up as the leader to make sure the group earns some goodwill from their senpais and staffs.

He was the 16-year-old boy who practice his hardest into the wee hours to memorize and improve his MC speech.

Nakai always come up with interesting reaction or punch line in order to earn the laugh from the audiences. Watching him closely, you can see in his eyes that he always think about what to do next to get the best reaction from the audiences.

~~ Is he stingy or is he generous? ~~

Many people said he is stingy, but how can a stingy person usually buys expensive stuffs -- like iPod or Refrigerator -- as gifts to SMAP's managers and staffs. How can a stingy person donate a big amount of money to Haiti, so big that he's required to provide proper identification and document when he made the donation.

~~Is he kind or is he strict ? ~~

Watching Utaban when he interacted with his juniors, even though he bullied them but I sensed that he is actually very kind to them in private. When he scolded them, it's not that serious at all. But he's different when he's with SMAP. He must be very strict when they were young because if he's not, he wouldn't have hit Goro-chan and Kimura in the face. Well, with Kimura it's more like a fight. But the way Kimura told the story in WUS, it seemed that Nakai was mad at him for something group/work-related. So I take this incident as the leader doing his job making sure every members is in line rather than just a 2TOP fight.

I'd been wondering whether Nakai is still very strict with the younger 3 even till this day and I think I got my answer from WAS MC. After Tsuyoshi poured water on the stage and Nakai and Kimura had to wipe the stage to keep it dry. Nakai slowly walked up the stair to Tsuyoshi and said "Kusanagi-san". Even though I couldn't see Nakai's face but Tsuyoshi's face was very clear. He was really afraid of Nakai there. His body language looked very much like a child waiting to be scolded by his parent.

But he's also very kind to the younger three. Like when Kimura talked about Goro's or Tsuyoshi's incidents on air, Nakai tried to stop him and sided with those two. Whenever Tsuyoshi talked about his incident and said that he had caused trouble to everyone, Nakai always jump in with "no, it's not" right away. And with Shingo......I love the way Nakai looks at Shingo now. During the time when he doesn't talk much and just observe other members, Nakai always look at Shingo like a proud parent looking at his grown up son.

~~ Does he love or hate the fans? ~~

Many fan reports said he usually doesn't interact with fans at all. He stays away most of the time during lucky-san corners in SMAP concerts. As far as I know, he never wave, smile, or give any fan services when fans meet him in his private time. Everyone in SMAP says he is a clean freak and doesn't like touching people, including SMAP members when he's not in the mood. At one point in Celery PV when Shingo put his hand on Nakai's shoulder, he just turned around and looked at Shingo while taking Shingo's hands off of his shoulder. (I love that Shingo often try to touch Nakai just to mess with him XD) I've seen him do something like that to Goro and Tsuyoshi as well. The only person I've never seen him do that to is Kimura. Oh how I miss the good old days of SMAPxSMAP when these two hugging and hanging on to each other most of the time.

Some people doesn't like how he interacts with fans. But can we really say that he doesn't love his fans? I don't know but the gratitude in his face, in his voice, and in his body language when he said his final message to fans in the last day of We Are SMAP! tour tell me otherwise. I saw it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears. His speech there really got me all choked up. The gratitude to the fans is clearly there in his voice. The love to the fans is etched in every single word he spoke. And the sadness in his face when he said sayonara just sealed it for me. That's why every fans around me got all teary eyed after he finished his speech.

This man really is difficult to understand. But one thing I know for sure is that Nakai Masahiro loves SMAP and his fans very much. That's why he's not just SMAP's leader, but I look at him as my leader as well.

I always say I'm SMAP-ichiban and love all member equally. But ever since Memory~June, my love and respect for Nakai has risen to another level. So I guess now I'm Nakai-ichiban then ^_^
