Authors Note: Here’s something to warm you up this icy winter~
You’re sitting on a beach. It’s the middle of July, and the sun is high in the sky. You came here with four friends, but they left to go play volleyball with some random guys, and not really feeling like joining you decided to stay in your chair and enjoy the sounds and sea-breeze around you. You find comfort in having time to yourself and your thoughts.
You closed your eyes and enjoyed the feeling of the sun shining through your eyelids. A thought passes and you realize it’s probably bad for your eyes to be sitting facing the sun directly. You think about reaching for your sunglasses, and ponder over it for a moment when suddenly the light shining through your eyelids dim and brighten, on and off. You were confused for a moment, when you realize it’s a person waving their hand back and forth, probably checking if you’re awake or not. You are about to open your eyes to see who it is when suddenly you feel a pair of sunglasses being placed over your eyes.
You open your eyes ever so slightly to see the person standing in front of you. It’s a guy, not far from your age, and he’s just staring at you. He was one of the guys that was playing the volleyball game, from what you could make out he was the one who asked if you were sure you didn’t want to play, and then tripped over nothing while walking away… Jinki was his name. Normally you would’ve shown the guy that you were awake and told him to leave, but there was something about him personally that made you intrigued. The way he smiled at you earlier, how his eyes felt soft and warm, and there was something in his voice that made you have goosebumps, and just thinking about his voice gave you goosebumps again. You wonder if he’s going to walk away or say something when he looked around and started walking away. You feel a strong pang in your chest, and wonder why you’re so disappointed, when suddenly you feel a towel cover your body. He gently tucks the side of the blanket around you, making sure it wouldn’t fly away with the wind. And then, after that, you heard a dragging sound, and taking a peek at him you saw he was bringing the cooler with the snacks right by your side, so you wouldn’t have to get up. You couldn’t believe what was going on. He was taking care of you, and he didn’t even know you. He was showing you more concern in an hour than your last boyfriend had throughout the whole 3 weeks you dated him. You thought to yourself how you would be an idiot if you let him get away before thanking him, when suddenly he seem to have tripped over something and ended up holding himself over your chair, his face close enough that you felt the heat emitting from his face, and the gasp of breath he let out when he realized how close he was. You thought he would’ve gotten off already, but you felt your face grow hot when he didn’t move, you opened your eyes slightly and saw that he was looking directly at your lips. You could feel your heart pounding, and you knew your face was as red as a tomato, but for some reason Jinki didn’t notice as he leaned closer. You closed your eyes and then… you waited but nothing happened. You opened your eyes and saw him in front of you squatting down and rifting up his hair in frustration. The only thing running through your head is that this boy could not be more perfect, as you sat up and leaned your hands on your knees, and a smile grew on your face when you heard him mumbling to himself. You leaned forward a bit more to hear what he was saying.
“Aish, I can’t believe I almost did that. What if she woke up and saw me? She would’ve called me a pervert, and that would be the last I see of her. Stupid. Stupid. She doesn’t even know me. I don’t know her, yet…” he mumbled, looking up to see my face inches away. He flew back onto the sand in surprise as you continued look at him, a smile prevalent on your face. You got up from your chair, placing the towel beside you, and then squatting down in front of him as he was just doing before. His face was a glowing red, and he was slowly breaking out into a sweat, but you looked past that and smiled at him.
“I’m Kim Kyuhee. 20 years old. I like reading, eating sweet stuff, cats, and meeting new people. I work at a library part time, I go to Gwanbong University and major in Literature, I rent with one of my friends over there. I’ve been in a few fail relationships, cause no guy would care if I l damage my eyesight, get sunburn, or if I have to get up if I’m thirsty.” I said, as the embarrassment became evident on his face. “So, now you know a bit about me. What about yourself?” You said. He blinked a bit before registering what you said. He must’ve realized that he was taking a while, as he sat up and faced you properly.
“Ah- my name is Jinki, Lee Jinki, and uh, some of my friends call me Onew. I like to sing, eat chicken, and- I’ve never had a girlfriend before, I’m 22 by the way. So about before, I’m really sorry, I honestly don’t know what got over me, it’s just that there’s something about you, and I don’t know what it is, your smile, the way your eyes spoke to me, and the small blue speckle you have on your right eye is very pretty, and i know we just met but I-” You put your hand over his soft mouth.
“I like you.” you said, as Jinki stared at you wide-eyed. “Do you like me too?” He simply nodded, obviously at a loss for words. I smiled at him, moving my hand from over his mouth to his cheek. “Good. So now we can kiss.” you say, bringing his face to yours as your lips touch. You feel him place his hands on either side of your head as you run your fingers through his soft damp hair, probably a mix of sea water and sweat, and you lean back to the chair as he moves closer, kissing you gently as if you were the most precious thing to him, you felt like crying on how wonderful he was, and when you parted you realized you were crying. He looked at you airtight as he wiped away your tears with his thumb, and you looked up to his eyes and saw you reflection. Your eyes had changed. You’re home.
