Hazel has hurt her paw. She came in the night before last, limping and dripping blood on the carpet, and we dithered a bit over whether it was bad enough to justify calling a vet, and eventually decided that it was... it was 10pm by that point, so we had to go to the emergency vet, who charged us $185 for a bandage, a collar, a shot of painkillers and the advice to see another vet in the morning. (Next time she hurts herself, she'd better do it during the day, that's all I can say.) The day-vet prescribed a week's worth of antibiotics and lots of rest and the use of a buster collar (apparently these things are called buster collars, who knew?) when there's no one around to watch her. She seems to be recovering, though she can't walk more than a couple of steps at a time, so she's sitting around looking sorry for herself. We assumed it was a fight with another cat, but the day-vet said that she'd probably gotten her paw caught in something. I can't imagine what it was, though, it ripped two of her claws out...

I've been volunteering at Lifeline for the past two days. I think that's the first time I've been on a Friday, definitely the first time I've volunteered... next time I think I'll have to take the day off school to go on the Friday, the pickings were just so so so much better. I got, let's see... The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan, The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell (could've sworn it was Maria, but it says Mary on the cover), The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, Funny Boy by Shyam Selvadurai, The Hanged Man by Francesca Lia Block, The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, Half Asleep in Frog Pyjamas by Tom Robbins and Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (everyone should read this). I saw a few people I knew... the people from the farmers' markets (they know exactly how I like my breakfast and now I find that they volunteer at the same place that I do, and yet I don't know their names... there's something wrong here), Ryan from AG and Charmaine from BookCrossing. Next year all you Canberra people have to come; it's in the Budawang building of EPIC from 10am onwards on the 20th-23rd (I think?) of September. I also, y'know, did some work, but who cares about that? It was pretty much the same as last year, work-wise, except that I taped up some cardboard boxes (exciting!) and had even more people making "ohhhhh, maths whiz!" comments because... I can add up... in my head. Yeahhh. Oh, and I had a family spend $623 in one go! Seven green supermarket bags full of books and two boxes full of magazines, I wheeled it out to their car for them.

So yeah, the lazy bit of the holidays is definitely over. I'm going to the movies with Morgan and possibly Sophie tomorrow, and then I'm going to Melbourne until Saturday, and then I'm going ice-skating with Candi and co., and then school... god knows when I'm going to do this essay and research file, I might have to try and cram it in tomorrow.

Melbourne on Monday. Not sure if I've posted about that already, but whatever. It'll be fun, as always; I love Melbourne. We're staying with the McKenzies, who I haven't seen in ages... It was going to be the four of us, but Dad's staying home to look after Hazel and Isabelle seems to have done her back in, so it looks like it'll just be Mum and I.

I was going to post more about Melbourne, but it's 3am, as Sean has so kindly reminded me, and I'm going to bed.

(Oh, and saccharose, I have a package for you, it's been sitting on my bedside table for days but I'm going to post it tomorrow, I promise.)

lifeline, hazel
