last week a coworker of mine received a poster tube from
corbis, a company we use a lot for our photo permissions and research. we, project managers, used to be much more involved in the photo permissions and research and we used to get stuff from our photo vendors a lot more. it was kind of a shock for anything to get something from them, let alone a poster tube of stuff. it turned out to be large prints of the photos and images they own. the prints are on really thick paper, but not glossy like poster paper. they also have grid lines on the back of the image. a few of the project managers have tacked up the posters in their cubes or along the outside of the cube walls to add some "color" to our otherwise gray workspace.
the rest of the posters were left in our "into-production" cube, where all of the soon-to-be-launched projects are kept. it's also the cube where we leave candy and cookies we want to share with our group. anyway, i kept passing the cube on my way to the kitchen and eying one of the patterns: a black and earth-red thick swirl pattern. i loved the colors and the movement of the swirls. so today, i bit the bullet and grabbed it. while i was looking at the others in the stack one of my other coworkers stopped by and we chatted about the possible uses of these "posters". she mentioned buying one of the photo-frame screens (like this
one) and instead of using actual photos in each frame, cut up a large photo into 8 x 10 pieces and creating a photo mosaic. after she got tired of the image, she replaced each frame with a piece of cool wrapping paper. she also said she lined the backs of her bookcases with pattered paper, just to give her very bland ikea "billy" bookcases more depth. i looked in the stacks of posters and found this cool pattern using neon stripes on black. the stripes weren't in lines, but in another rounded neon swirl pattern. it reminds me of using the music room chalk holders with the five prongs so the music teacher could write lines of music on the chalkboard. anyway, there were 2 sheets of that, so i grabbed that and added it to my other poster and i'm taking them home with me.
i'm going to line our living room bookcases, or at least 2 of them, with the neon pattern paper. for the red swirl, i'm going to cut them up into evenly sized squares or rectangles and then frame each one (taking full advantage of the penny sale at aaron bothers). then i'll hang them on the wall in a pattern, maybe 3 rows of 3, off-set from each other. each frame will be only an inch apart from each other, really expanding the pattern. i might replace what we currently have above our bed in our bedroom with this. while i love our
vettriano poster, i think this new project would feel a little more personalized.
i'm thinking about a couple of prints/posters i currently have stashed away and i could definitely try this mosaic technique on them, too. although i must remember not to get too carried away. i can see this getting WAY out of control...
i also must remember to pick up a frame for my
england map, which was sold as wrapping paper. pah! my mom gave me a
paris one a few years ago, which i framed and it hangs above our couch. i'd be great to find another, in a similar style, so we can have a nice 3-piece collage on that wall.
