recently, news passed through the grapevine about the departure of one of our acquisitions editors. i've been working with her recently on a set of high-profile solutions manuals and i worked with her for the first time earlier this year on a core textbook that needed to be published within 3 months, start to finish. she can be sometimes very difficult, and i mean on the verge of being slightly bitchy. of course, after she's bitchy, she'll surprise you by being super nice and very accommodating. it's weird and i'm wondering if she's a gemini (i've known those born under the gemini sign who are EXACTLY like this). anyway, recently, i've been having a lot of issues with her regarding these two solutions manuals. i know they're high-priority and i know they need to be typeset because the other ones done earlier this year looked so great. but seriously, if you knew about this, why the fuck did you wait until the VERY LAST MINUTE to put these into production?! there's not point crying to me about how tight the schedule is - you made your bed now sleep in it! i mean, seriously now. yes, the authors are going to have to deal with providing quick turnarounds, that's not MY fault. you handle your authors and i'll handle the compositor. *sigh* anyway, it was a shock to a lot of people to hear she was leaving. she had recently taken over an entire list of super high-profile calculus books and definitely cause a HUGE stir by mixing up the schedule and moving book schedules to come out much earlier than originally planned, giving the author like ZERO time to write a completely new book. now she's leaving and she left a HUGE mess. anyway, today was her last day. she works off-site, so she made a trip out here on her last day to say good-bye to people. one of those people was me. she handed me a card and said "i just wanted to thank you for all the hard work you've done on these latest titles. seriously, as long as you can get these books out before the end of the year, you're a hero." she handed me a card and said good-bye. inside the card was a starbucks gift card. inside the card she said that the company is lucky to have such a dedicated and smart employee and she wished me luck for the future. it was extremely nice to get this kind of recognition. i don't consider myself that GREAT of an employee, i just do my job. and, wow, i just checked the balance. let's just say it's a lot more than when i got for my 2-yr anniversary from human resources... i'm so totally stoked.

in this age of starbucks, i find it hard to imagine what it was like before starbucks was around. i'm sure there were mom-and-pop coffee shops all over. i know my mom, who worked as an assistant for a VP, always had to buy a certain type of coffee from this local roasting company. however, after starbucks started being more prevalent, my mom would buy coffee from starbucks for the office (she actually created a coffee club; if you wanted some of the good stuff, you had to pay 50 cents for a cup - this money would fund the next pound(s) of coffee). i know my mom and i started going to starbucks when i was young. i knew as soon as i visited my first one i wanted to work there. i also wonder, not just about the coffee, but gift cards. i think that the starbucks card is THE #1 generic gift to give everyone. for those who like starbucks, like me, it's not necessarily that generic - it's a great gift! but, i mean, for gifts to coworkers or quick host/hostess gifts or birthday gifts to people you don't know all that well, the starbucks gift card is a great option. i mean, it's better than cash, which can be kinda tacky, and even if the receiver isn't that into coffee, starbucks has plenty of other items to offer. i know i'm sound like a total tool now, but it's true. we had a birthday party last year for my best friend's boyfriend and our other good friend, paul. i knew what to get paul, as i used to live with him and i knew him much more than keith, sanam's boyfriend. the thing was, even though keith said not to bring any gifts, i feel weird going to a birthday celebration without a gift. i knew he loved coffee, so i got him a small starbucks gift card. he was slightly embarrassed at the gift, but loved it anyway. i gotta say, though, for workers, this gift card is such a godsend. what else would you get an employee?

thanks, starbucks, gift cards, coffee
