Name five books that are important to you.
It's very hard to limit this to just five. ;-)
1. Treasure is the Rose, Julia Cunningham
My all-time favorite book, about an 11th-century widow living in a haunted tower who must solve a mystery to save her life. I first read it when I was 11, and I'll never forgive the SCA for spoiling this magical novel by teaching me what is and is not authentic.
2. The Highly Sensitive Person, Elaine Aron
Perhaps the only psychological profile to ever fit me. I'm not a freak! This book has done wonders for my self-esteem.
3. Celtic Wicca, Jane Raeburn
I didn't just make it up! This book describes my religion perfectly. There is nothing in it with which I disagree. Another book that affirms my reality.
4. Time of the Twins, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickmen. Neither my favorite of the Dragonlance series nor the best written, it is still the archtypical Dragonlance novel. It's hard to explain why this is my all-time favorite fantasy series. The central plot is certainly not original, and the ideology of many of the authors can be downright frightening, but somehow, the characters live. The numerous continuity errors (I'm not blind to this series' faults) manage to create the illusion that Krynn is real, and the authors use if for inspiration but frequently get the facts wrong. The game of these novels is to create the meta-truth behind them.
5. Dragonsinger, Anne McCaffrey. In many ways, the Pern series is the mirror image of the Dragonlance series for me. Whereas in the Dragonlance series the characters are more fascinating than the world, the Pern series creates a brilliantly imaginative world peopled with less than three-dimensional characters. While I don't like the treatment of violence against women in these books (the book I mentioned is the least objectionable), the amount of detail on the cultures of Pern is wonderful. To this day, my concept of what a dragon should be comes from McCaffrey.
