1) My first thought was that sparklie vampires are very important.
From Montague Summers, The Vampire in Europe: True Tales of the Undead, 1929:
"The presence of the Vampire in this his first condition may easily be discerned in the dark by a succession of sparks like those from a flint and steel... At the time of this occurrence, five years ago, our village was so infested with Vampires that the inhabitants were forced to assemble together in two or three houses...in order to avoid the assaults of the Obours, who lit up the streets with their sparkles..." p. 317
Vampires have been sparkling for a long time. ;-)
2) That's a very interesting perspective. I take it you've only seen the movies or scenes from the movies? Many people say she seems empty or without personality, which has puzzled me since she's one of the most three dimensional and original darkly twisted characters I've read in a while. She might be unlikeable or unsympathetic, but she clearly has a personality.
The movies, however, shave off all of Bella's rough edges. She's no longer mentally disturbed or self-centered or downright incompetent at times, but that might not leave anything left of her personality. In the movies Bella is just a straight-A student who loves a vampire. I can see that as boring.
