This week marked the one-year anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. In many ways I'm lucky. I'm finished with treatment and as far as I know I'm cancer-free. The cough that had me worried turned out to be allergies. It's still frustrating living with my parents and scary not having a job, but I'm sure something will come through.
So what have I learned after one year in Cancer-land?
"Young" means under 45.
No one is truly alone.
We can get through anything, even if we think we can't.
Nothing ever goes according to plan.
Never let your insurance lapse, even if you have to pay $400 a month.
Always have two credit cards (I screwed up on this one.)
The only cancer-causing behavior within an individual's control is smoking.
Non-smokers can get cancer. (I have never smoked.)
No one deserves cancer.
Soy is actually bad for pre-menopausal women.
Living a healthy lifestyle will not prevent cancer, but it sure makes surviving the treatment a lot easier.
Cancer can too be a walk in the park - a really scary park at midnight with monsters and drive-by shootings.
My life is valuable. I am alive. I will survive.
