We saw Slumdog Millionaire last night. It was a really good movie, but I think it seemed really outdated. Maybe its because the movie centered around this poor orphan kid who wins Who Wants to Be A Millionaire which was big here almost 10 years ago, or maybe it was the funny line dance at the end of the movie that just seemed totally out of place, but it looked like the movie should have been made in the 90s.
The acting was good though and I liked how they had a flashback from the kid's history which explained how he knew each answer. So it was a pretty cool premise, but also a bit on the lame side if you think about it.
I'm seeing Watchmen next weekend. I gave in and actually bought the graphic novel the other day and it says on the front cover "one of Time Magazine's 100 greatest novels of all time" and I'm thinking are you kidding me? Its a comic book!
but I read it in just over a day and the storyline is so deep and involving that I can see why its on that list. This is definitely not just another superhero flick.
The film is set in 1985 and due to a strange series of events, Richard Nixon is still president because he was granted additional terms in office. America won Vietnam thanks to the only real superhero on the planet, Dr. Manhattan who people refer to as God.
The other main characters are masked vigilantes with no real powers except a decent left-hook.
Anyway, what Watchmen does is explores the mind of someone who would devote their life to fighting crime. Would these people really be nice happy go lucky do gooders? Watchmen doesn't portray them like that, they are some fucked up individuals with some deep psychological problems.
Amidst all of this, the cold war is still going strong and the world is on the verge of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. The book explores how people react to these masked vigilantes during this time. They aren't thankful for them, they're afraid of them.
The book takes a big plot turn when Dr. Manhattan becomes fed up with humanity and leaves Earth. Since Dr. Manhattan was the only reason the Soviet Union was kept in check, when he leaves, the world panics and America and the Soviet Union both prepare to start world war three.
Anyway, I recommend it, and I can't wait to see what Zach Snyder does with the story.
