I really like Uchida Yuki.

2013.06 Pict up - Interview (Kame, Kase Ryo, Uchida Yuki)

A complete discussion!?
The performing 'me' and 'OreOre’.

Actors have various faces,
an occupation where they let us see many ‘me’.
But who is the necessary 'me' that is the host persona in order [for the actors] to perform?
A discussion about the performing 'me' and 'OreOre'.

----: Kamenashi-san, Uchida-san, you have appeared in a drama together before, right?

Kamenashi: Yes, but it's the first time I appear together with Kase-san.

Uchida: It's also the first time for me.

----: What is your impression of Kase-san?

Kamenashi: He has the image of an 'actor'.

Uchida: He plays various roles.

Kamenashi: I had the image of ‘is he a person who is talking little, is he a serious person?’

Kase: Why do you use the interrogative form (*laughs*).

----: Conversely, Kase-san, what is your impression of the two?

Kase: I had a somewhat different image. I am also doing this work but compared with them I am more in the shadows (*laughs*).

----: Kamenashi-san, it's the case for you but Uchida-san has also worked for the first time with director Miki Satoshi, right?

Uchida: Originally, I had heard stories from many seniors like Matsuo Suzuki-san and Matsushige Yutaga-san. They told me, 'You better work with Miki-san. It's definitely fun'. Then because I had just heard such stories I had a feeling of, "Yes!!". I had a feeling of fate.

----: Kase-san, for you this is the second movie [with Miki] after 'Instant Swamp'. What did you think when you heard about the offer?

Kase: I was happy. But I was also anxious. The worlds of director Miki are very very strange. In the previous movie 'Instant Swamp' I did my best so it was impossible not to do my best in this one.

‘I [ore]’ was dividing?
Kamenashi Kazuya at the shooting location

----: There was anxiety, how was it at the "OreOre" shooting location? Was there something difficult?

Kamenashi: My schedule was hard. I have barely any memory of sleeping during the shooting period.

----: You played 33 roles?

Kamenashi: Yes. I was on duty [filming] from mornings on, I had also no free time. As for my private time, I only remember hanging up a hammock.

----: A hammock?

Kamenashi: During shootings I couldn't read the script. Because of that I thought about changing my environment and bought it on the web.

----: Do you often buy hammocks?

Kamenashi: No, it's my first hammock (*laughs*). From midnight to morning I needed about 5 hours to hang it up at my balcony.

Kase: I didn't know that (*laughs*).

Uchida: I heard about it, in those days Kame-chan was a little strange/odd, right?

Kamenashi: I would suddenly say things like, "I want to grill mochi", "I want to eat bread" and would buy a toaster. My personality/identity might have crumbled a little (*laughs*).

----: You were cornered?

Kamenashi: When I talked with the director about buying the hammock he said, "A hammock, that's good!". But he seemed to have thought 'I am sorry for cornering you' (*laughs*).

Kase: Even playing a leading part of team!Miki is difficult, but you also played 33 roles, right? If it were me, I would go crazy. [‘team’ here refers to the actors, staff etc. working with/for Miki]

----: It's difficult playing a leading part of team!Miki?

Kase: I think it's definitely difficult. When I did the previous movie 'Instant Swamp' I only worked on half the shooting days. This time I had only five shooting days, and yet I was completely exhausted (*laughs*). However, Kamenashi-san was energetic. For example, at an one hour break I wanted to sleep about 45 minutes. But Kamenashi-san said things like, "I want to eat chicken wings!" and went to eat somewhere without sleeping. When I saw that I felt my own age (*laughs*).

----: Uchida-san, was the shooting difficult for you?

Uchida: Not at all. Naturally, I had watched Miki-san's works. So even when he made an unexpected request it was OK.

----: Were you able to ‘prepare’?

Uchida: I was able to ‘not prepare’ myself. [She doesn’t mean she was unprepared but that she was more than prepared for the role so didn’t have to prepare.]. Related to my current role of Sayaka, I went to the shooting location with 'no guard [unguarded against attacks]'. Because I had decided to hang on an invisible string and become Miki-san's puppet, it was not difficult at all. But when I watched Kame-chan I also felt my age (*laughs*).

Kase: He was energetic, right? I never saw him dozing at the shooting location.

Kamenashi: Of course I had a desire for sleep, but when I sleep even a little at a shooting location I wouldn’t be able to move/work. It's a situation where I am only supported by the three big desires - desire for sleep, desire for food [appetite] and sexual desire. So I am really very sensitive to my appetite (*laughs*).

Kase: I vividly remember you walking around with a toaster.

Uchida: You always sang something or danced.

Kamenashi: I think I was for sure in an excited state. My adrenalin was high.

It’s different from ‘me’, it’s amazing
It’s different from ‘me’, it’s strange

----: Now I want to ask a question concerning ‘me’. In Miki-san's works a lot of strange characters appear, ‘I felt it, team!Miki is strange in this way’.

Kamenashi: That the staff and all actors like Miki-san. Thinking about it it’s…

Kase: ...strange (*laughs*)

Kamenashi: Yes (*laughs*). Because everyone has the same mind. When looking at it objectively I think I did various strange things. But I felt really comfortable.

----: Among you three, when do you think ‘that person is different from me, it’s amazing’?

Kase: When I watched the completed movie. Kamenashi-san accomplished to play 33 roles, it's amazing.

Uchida: I also think that. To maintain the ability to concentrate is difficult. Well, therefore he installed a hammock (*laughs*).

----: Kamenashi-san, when do you think, those two are 'amazing'?

Kamenashi: Their lines. It's necessary to speak them at the actual filming as if one speaks them for the first time. But, because in practice there have been rehearsals it's difficult to maintain the freshness. Kase-san has his own rhythm. How many times he performs something it's always fresh. I learnt a lot, I thought it's amazing.

----: Uchida-san's amazing side is?

Kamenashi: Uchida-san...

Kase: Excuse me, could we return to the talk about ‘this is strange’.

Uchida: Eh? Please don't return to it (*laughs*).

Kase: I met Uchida-san for the first time. I remember when I watched her perform with Kamenashi-san that I though, ‘Ah, Uchida-san is a strange person’. Her role was also strange, but it’s not only because of her role that I thought she was strange.

Kamenashi: Uchida-san has the heart of a young girl.

Uchida: That's not true. I am already of a fine age (*laughs*). Well, this talk is over!!!

Each of them has his/her own theory/opinion of acting
As an actor a ‘OO me’ is necessary

----: I think I want to get to the point. 'To perform at the location a OO-me is necessary'. Please discuss the words for OO. For example, an ‘objective me’ is necessary.

Kamenashi: A 'mad me’.

----: A ‘lack-of-common-sense-me me’?

Kamenashi: Yes, with my normal mental state I can't act. At times a 'lack of common sense/irrationality' where I pass beyond my good sense is necessary.

Kase: If there is nothing but an objective me I feel embarrassed and can do nothing.

Kamenashi: For example kissing a person one has met 2-3 days ago. For this a me that has no normal nerves/sensitivity is absolutely necessary.

Kase: For me... it's a 'soft me'. When I think obstinately that, 'I will definitely say those [specific] lines', I will certainly not be able to interact well at the shooting location. However, watching the other actors properly and performing after hearing the lines my own performance is also flexible each time. When there is no ‘soft me’ who listens to other people I won’t be able to do better than expected.

Uchida: Regarding what the two said, I think ‘it's like that’. I think both are necessary but for me only 'living' is necessary.

----: A story about daily life?

Uchida: Yes, to soar high in a world with no common sense, one has to live every day with all one's might. The greater the amplitude the higher one can soar.

----: Uchida-san, you live correctly, you are a person who does things correctly [a ‘good/proper’ person]. That's amazing.

Uchida: It seems not everyone is like that.

Kase: Yes, because good people are few Uchida-san appears strange.

Kamenashi: Ah, it was this what you meant (*laughs*). When you said Uchida-san was strange.

Kase: Well, yes more or less.

Uchida: In the beginning it was a shock when Kase-san told me, 'you are strange', but I am happy thinking he saw it at the location. I don't know to what extend I am strange but being strange is good (*laughs*).
