[Summary] OreOre by Hoshino Tomoyuki (2010)

[Note: In this chapter everyone thinks if Nagano as “Hiyama Daiki”. For example when Yasokichi is talking to him he calls him “Daiki”.].

p. 68 (cont.) - 82

On his way to work, Nagano grumbles about his mother and so forgets to mail the reply card. He only notices when he is changing clothes in the locker room because the card falls out of his pocket and lands at Yasokichi’s feet.

Yasokichi looks at it and mentions that such a class meeting is also like a social meeting to find a potential marriage partner. Nagano thinks that was why the mother was interested to get him to go to it.

At work, Nagano is not really in a good mood. When a customer asks for his business card he remembers that he gave his last one to *him*.

The customer looks at Nagano’s name plate which reads “Hiyama”, he says he will remember it and then leaves. Tashima who watched this comes over and scolds Nagano for his behaviour. Against his better judgment Nagano replies that the customer wasn’t going to buy anything anyway and was just wasting his time. They butt heads and in the end Tashmia tells him to get new business cards and take an early break. And as an afterthought he adds that Nagano will be working on Thursdays, too, now, as even on his days off Nagano is spending time in the shop so he can as well work.

Nagano goes to the office to apply for business cards. There he talks with Miyatake, who is a part timer but always knows what’s going on at the office. He already suspects something is up again between Tashima and Nagano. While they talk Nagano fills in the forms for the new business cards and writes in the name column “Hiyama Daiki”. Miyatake is a busybody and so Nagano gets away as fast as possible.

Nagano gets a call from Yasokichi to meet up for lunch. Yasokichi tells him he is going to quit his job. Nagano is the first to know. Nagano is surprised. Yasokichi wants to become a tax counsellor. He already started studying it at university once before but abandoned his studies. Nagano says he doesn’t know about all this, but Yasokichi tells him he should. Yasokichi had told him on the same day when Tashima shouted at Nagano for the first time in front of customers because a camera was out of stock. After the shouting Yasokichi invited Nagano for drinks and they talked about Yasokichi’s studies and Nagano’s troubles with the parents, etc.

Nagano remembers all except talking with Yasokichi about him becoming a tax counsellor. Yasokichi says that’s all right, it was not an important talk for Nagano and he doesn’t pay attention to people anyways. Nagano says that probably his head was full with other stuff at that time. Anyways, Yasokichi says he decided to try once more to be a tax counsellor.

Nagano asks if it was a good idea to give up his job, he could have done both, study and work. But in his heart he knows that the only time to study would have been at off-days. Yasokichi says he is serious about it, but Nagano says what if he fails and then is without job. Yasokichi says without risk there will be no success. Yasokichi also tells him that he doesn’t like to work in the service industry. Unlike Nagano, he doesn’t feel glad when he sees a costumer’s satisfied face or has any interest in electronic goods. Nagano says Yasokichi is not like that and they get into a little argument which ends with Yasokichi leaving.

~*~

Back at work, Nagano makes several little mistakes, like giving the wrong change etc. When he gets a mail from Yasokichi asking if he wants to go out for a drink so to not let things stand as they are between them, Nagano refuses because he is tired.

He immediately goes home after work and is not surprised to find the mother there preparing dinner. She says he is early so the rice is not ready, she is again fussing about his health. He goes to take a bath. While in the bathtub he thinks that most of the human body is made of water and he imagines himself dissolving and mixing with the water in the bathtub. No one would be able to tell the difference between him and the water anymore.

After he get out the food is ready. It’s delicious, but the mother goes on and on about her Korean language study circle.

The mother tells him the sister wants Nagano to see her kid, too. Nagano’s mood worsens because he doesn’t want to think about the sister. He doesn’t remember her, he has never been at her house and he has no interest in kids (or cats and dogs). He tells the mother that starting next month he will have to work more. She says then now, more then ever, it is the time to go and it’s his nephew after all. Nagano tells her he has no interest in little kids, the nephew is still like an animal. It would be better to visit him after he started talking.

So the mother says he should go for his sister’s sake. He refuses and the mother says he is insensitive towards other people’s feelings. It would make her and Kasumi happy if he showed his face. She says that even though he is nearly 30 years he has no consideration for others and he continue living his gloomy life alone forever. She says Mamiko was probably right to break it off.

Nagano denies that. He tells the mother that she just wants so see her grandson and uses him as an excuse. He tells her that this morning he told her he would return right after work because he would be tired and would want to sleep, but she has disregarded his words. He also tells her she is a trouble for the sister. The mother tells him that she is not, she has showed consideration in waiting for any contact from them but there was none and that even a parent’s patience has its limits.

Nagano tells her to just leave him alone. The mother has a vacant look and doesn’t say anything. Then she says she gets it and will return home. Nagano tells her it’s late and she can go tomorrow.

The mother says that it’s her responsibility that he is like that, her way of raising him was bad. She is now paying for her mistakes.

Nagano says he has said too much and she shouldn’t worry about it. But the mother leaves. Nagano knows he should follow her but his careless side wins and he doesn’t.
