* The summary is a little strange but I have to use Nagano, *he*, that guy [the student] to differentiate between the different ‘incarnations’.

Chapter 2 - Awakening
p 46 - 49
Nagano gazed at himself and *he* *himself* gazed back.
*He* appears to have come back from work, wearing a dark and silver suit and looking tired. The hair is short and styled, *he* wears fashionable black rimmed glasses. *He* has a double-edged eyelid, which Nagano does not have. So there are facial differences between them. Nagano thinks that *he* is a good looking guy. *He* is pulling himself together and getting closer to Nagano, telling him in an angry voice to go away. Even *his* voice sounds like Nagano's.
*He* asks if he wants a repeat of last week. He should stop with this farce and wants to know what he is planning. Nagano says he hasn't been here last week, he hasn't been here for two years.
*He* asks if that is the case, then 'who' was there last week? Nagano says he doesn't know.
*He* looks at Nagano and mutters that Nagano is certainly somehow different [from the guy last week]. Then *he* tells Nagano that last week and the week before someone like him [Nagano] had come here. An university student who insisted this was his home.
The mother interrupts but *he* asks her to let *him* deal with Nagano. *He* tells Nagano if he doesn't go away immediately he will really call the police, but *he* looks uncomfortable. Then *he* bluntly asks for Nagano’s business card.
Nagano is confused and hesitates but *he* signals him with his eyes to play along because the mother is there. Nagano gives him his last Megaton business card. The name on it reads Nagano Hitoshi. *He* wants Nagano to write his phone number on it too.
When Nagano looks up from writing his number on the card he is dazzled by a flashing light. The mother took a photo of him. *He* asks her in an angry voice what she is doing? She tells him it's an evidence photo, just in case.
*He* gestures Nagano to go away with one hand, but with the other - the one that is out of sight of the mother - *he* makes a gesture like dialling a phone. Nagano understands and nods slightly and then without turning back hurries to the train station.
p 49 - 59
Nagano soon gets a call from *him* to meet up at the station. Nagano waits at the McDonalds while sipping tea and observing the street. He still misses when *he* goes by and is startled when *he* sits down next to him. They don't look directly at each other. Nagano is tense. *He* looks at Nagano but Nagano looks away.
*He* drinks the same kind of tea. Nagano has a bad feeling and asks quietly for an explanation.
*He* tells him that *he* already told Nagano. A guy like him had come twice to the home. That guy said it was his spring vacation and so he came to visit. That guy had a similar hairstyle to Nagano (casually long and parted a the centre), non styled eyebrows, similar clothes... But that guy's hair was dyed a light brown, he had a stubble, and his face was slightly different, too, he was also taller.
Nagano says that was not him and *he* says that he knows that.
They are silent. Nagano touches his phone, *he* also opens and closes his own. That phone is the same model as Yasokichi's. It has a whale shark charm on it, like Yasokichi's. Nagano also has that same charm. Minami gave it to them as a souvenir from a travel.
Nagano wants to know what happened to the guy/the student. *He* says he sent him away, but he acted violently and so Masae [the mother] wanted to call the police but the guy got away.
Nagano makes a face because *he* called his mother Masae. Nagano remembers when he was 14 his mother told him to call her Masae and not mother. She felt she was still young so Masae would be better.
*He* says that the guy who had come called her "Maasa". And she was like that she didn't know him and that he acted over-familiar. But *he* couldn't say that he didn't know him.
They look at each other's image in the window glass and see themselves. So Nagano understands.
*He* says at first *he* thought *his* older brother had returned, but whatever way *he* looked at him [the guy] he was not his older brother. When he came the second time *he* wanted to ask him more but the mother thought he was an impostor/swindler and wanted to call the police and took evidence photos like she did today. But looking at the photos there was clearly a resemblance.
Nagano interrupts and asks about *his* older brother. Because he is an only child.
*He* is surprised that Nagano is an only child. *He* tells him that *his* brother left home about 10 years ago and didn't come back in all this time. Nagano says so it's possible *he* doesn't know him then. He also asks if *he* even believes there is a brother.
*He* says there is one. They had contact in the last 10 years. And *he* shows him a mail from *his* brother. The sender is "Hiroshi". *He* explains he is two years older than *him* and when Nagano says the mail is a little gloomy, *he* says that's because the brother is also gloomy. He also was not good at studying. He always told the parents he would find his own way. He choose to work in a beauty salon but his boss told him he was not suited for the work and he should quit. So he disappeared.
Nagano feels uneasy with that story and so tries to change the subject. *He* mentioned that *he* worked as a government worker, so Nagano asks *him* about that. Nagano also tells him that he works at an electronic shop and has lived alone for 7-8 years.
*He* wants to know why he didn't return to his parent's home for two years. Nagano hesitates then bluntly says that it's because the mutual relationship between him and his father is bad. *He* mumbles to *himself* that it's like with *his* brother. *He* asks about the mother. Nagano says it's his real mother, he didn't confuse her with someone else. The mother is someone who can't recognize her own children, she only wants to see what she wants to see.
*He* wants to know why Nagano returned after two years. Nagano hesitates to tell him, but then he confesses the whole truth, that Hiyama Daiki episode, his problems with his father and mother, his frustration about not being a photographer etc. *He* listens, but it's not only that. Because *he* is him [Nagano] he wants to trust *him*. Because they are him/*him*. It's basically like Nagano is confessing to himself.
*He* wants to know if Daiki's mother and their mother are similar. Nagano says they are not. Daiki's mother looks shabbier and is not such a clean-freak like their own mother, she is totally different from their show-off mother. But their attitude is a little similar.
*He* wants to know what Nagano thinks about Daiki’s mother. Nagano says she is isolated and he feels pity but she is still a stranger.
*He* studies the table then after a while looks up and says that Nagano can only become Daiki.
Nagano is lost for words. Then feels betrayed and gets angry saying *he* wants to settle down at his parent's home. But *he* says that's not the case, but their mother doesn’t even recognise Nagano. But Daiki's mother thinks he is her own child, so shouldn't he take care of her?
Nagano says this is just a plot to drive him away.
But *he* says it is a matter of taking care of people. Nagano should take care of Daiki's mother and *he* will take care of *his*/their parents, who *he* doesn't even like. Nagano says if *he* doesn't even like them that *he* could just leave and take care of Daiki's mother *himself*.
*He* says that even if *he* went she wouldn't recognise him. Nagano is now her son, so taking care of her is his duty.
Nagano asks isn't it Daiki's role, but *he* answers that Daiki is probably not her son anymore.
*He* feels that in the same way that Nagano is no longer recognised as a member of the Nagano-family, the real Daiki is no longer a part of the Hiyama-family. If the real Daiki were to return home the mother would say she doesn't know him and drive him away. Because for her Nagano is the real Daiki.
Nagano is still angry. *He* tells Nagano he doesn't get it. It's not just that *he* is the real Nagano Hitoshi, and Nagano is a fake Daiki that has become the real Daiki. There is also that guy to consider [the student].
What if he returns from work one day and the mother will not know him, but say that another person is her son. What if the parents don't recognise *him* as their son, like the mother doesn’t recognise Nagano now. Therefore, he will stay at the parent's home.
Basically *he* concludes there is nothing to be done. *He* will be Nagano Hitoshi, and Nagano will be Hiyama Daiki.
Suddenly the phone rings. It's his/*his* mother. She wants *him* to come home.
After hanging up *he* says they should exchange e-mail addresses, too. They pull out their phones and *he* sees the whale shark strap but doesn't comment on it.
*He* shows him how *he* filed Nagano's data. It's under Hiyama Daiki. Nagano files *his* data under Nagano Hitoshi. *He* just nods.
They say they will stay in contact.
