Yesterday I got another one of those emails that I typically toss out without reading it through. For some reason this one caught my attention and by the time I was done I was glad I hadn't tossed it. During the many chats, emails, postings etc that I've shared with you all we've mentioned along the way at different times how violence effects us. ( Read more... )

I was just talking to my children the other day about abductions, not talking to strangers, etc.
As you and others know they are 3, 8, and 9. NOW is the time to talk to them about drugs, strangers, sex - yes sex!, and another important one - a fire escape route in case theres a fire in the middle of the night. Even with small kids, you can make it seem like a game by having them think hard and draw pictures of your homes with escape routes and a plan of who/what to grab.

Also, I am glad you brought this up, when I was a teen there were 3 different episodes where I was almost abducted. Twice fast thinking helped me escape by shouting NO! (to grab attention) and by running the opposite way the perpetrators were. (They were in a car). The third time I was 17, and in a Safeway with my Grandpa cashing my first paycheck. This guy approached us, thrust his business card in my hand and told me he wanted to make "Home movies" of me. My Grandpa yelled at him to go away. Well after my Mom did some checking around, found out he was a shady guy and he made pornos. Scary.

Anyways, dangers are everywhere, and only thru education and "street smarts" will we survive. :-)
And by the way, ever since that movie "Silence of the Lambs", I am terrified of vans LOL

And one other time that I almost got kidnapped, I was in the 6th grade, it was just getting dark and I was riding my bike home from my friends house. This guy (I will never forget him as long as I live, still gives me goosebumps), was in this white car, had very long dirty blonde hair, pimples, a leather jacket and his steering wheel was that kind that looks like chains.

Well he drove slowly next to me, was trying to talk to me saying he will give me a ride home. I ignored him and was scared. I rode past a school, then a creek afraid he was going to grab me any time, and the first house I came to after the creek, I rode up, dropped my bike and opened the screen door like I lived there. As soon as I opened the screen door he peeled off really fast. I waited a few minutes to make sure he was gone and rode home as fast as I could. I never stayed out that late again.

Geez that's awful! Guys like this should be strung up! I'm so glad you had the sense to get away. It's a shame there are many girls and boys too that would fall for such things. Did you ever see that episode of Oprah where they had a hidden camera watching as kids who were apparently taught NOT to go with strangers were lured away? The parents were shocked at how easily it was done. I know, I've talked to my kids too but I fear no matter what we say there will always be a way for someone to get their attention. Just pray daily it never happens!

Yes I did...and they did one like that last week of Ricky Lake, thats when I had that discussion with the kids. They covered...strangers, guns...I cant remember what else. It was scary and I even cried when the kids on hidden cam went with the strangers!

I really wonder if there is any child that is safe anymore. I don't think so. Awful :(

Well one thing is...I never let my kids walk anywhere out my court by themselves, unless a grownup is with them. Also I know alot of parents who let thier kids walk home from school by themselves...I couldnt stomach that. No way no how. Its just too scary these days!

We're the same way. We take the boys to and from school. Never are they allowed to even walk to the store by themselves. I see kids here all the time even younger than mine wandering for blocks and the parents don't care. Two doors away the father leaves the kids home and goes off to the bar. They've gone to school in sandals and t-shirts in the middle of winter! He's the one who never gets into trouble yet if I were to swat mine for being lippy there'd be a friggin childrens aid meeting going on behind me LOL

Sex too absolutely! Kids are having sex before 10 years old, I can't imagine! Thankfully my two still get grossed out seeing the underwear sections in the sears catalogue, I hope it stays that way for awhile LOL. But seriously you need to stay on them all the time. There are parents out there that just don't bother to talk to their kids and that's a real shame.

Silence of the lambs freaked me out too! LOL

Well, I think they just don't know how to approach that subject and they always think.."Not MY kid" and thats just wrong, you never assume your kids are perfect.

Hell thats good advice, never assume anything :-)

Yeah that movie...thats Brians fav movie of all time! He would watch it at least once a week until our vcr broke. lol

Silence of the lambs 2 sucked tho, did you see that one?

Oh ya, I love those ones that say not my kid. Meanwhile it's their little .....child that is the biggest troublemaker on the planet! We just got back from the community center. It's this thing they have at the beginning of the school year and you can go sign your kid up for a bunch of over priced, over competetive sports etc. You should have seen how some of the kids there were behaving! I'd have drifted them right through the wall if they'd been mine! :(
