Do we REALLY want socialized medicine?

One of my favorite quotes: "The truth is that a huge amount of tax is required to keep this system afloat. Because, like all government programs, it's proven terribly inefficient."
(and before anyone says it: i know that this is Canada and not the US. That doesn't mean that it can't be used as an example of some of the problems with socialized care. One of the reasons it's an issue has to do with shortages. I have not heard yet of a socialized medical situation without these things--or severe limitation on who can receive certain services...)
