Hm. Well I rarely ask the Gods for things in particular. I make offerings and do devotions regularly to a particular God. I meditate on him and seek any wisdom he would give, mostly because it is a very new relationship. I also give offerings and devotion to the Norse pantheon but that is also fairly new, I've only been doing it for about 6 months...
I haven't really had a problem I've felt necessary to bring before any gods...I have done magic before but I don't really involve deities in that. I don't know, I guess my desired relationship with the Gods is more friendship oriented than problem-answering oriented. Of course, I haven't had any real close relationships to a God or Gods in a long time. Perhaps down the road I will feel that way. In which case I imagine I would seek some answers from the gods with whom I'm most familiar.
Now my fiance, who is a huge Terry Pratchett fan, does make up his own deities. His opinion, though, is that it's mostly in the mind and the intent and if you need to focus your energy on something, why not make up the most fitting repository for it?
PS Have you seen the Hogfather movie? Very good.

Would you stay within the Norse pantheon, then?

The mini-series with Ian Richardson? When I heard his signature House of Cards line, I made squeaking noises at the telly. smarriveurr had no idea what I was on about.

This: http://www.amazon.com/Hogfather-David-Jason/dp/B0010X741Y/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1211307034&sr=8-1 is the movie. We found it at Blockbuster a couple months ago.

Would I stay within the Norse pantheon? Most likely. I have worked with the Greek pantheon quite a bit in the past and if I had an inkling to, I might go talk to them. But as it stands, when I do ritual or devotions, even if I don't call to any particular gods of the occasion, I call to Heimdallr as gate keeper and I focus on Yggdrasil as a gate. My mind is usually in Norse-mode I guess. It would take a sure shove to get me to explore another pantheon, especially if it wasn't even Greek. I've never in my whole life worked with gods outside of those two pantheons (beyond attending the Welsh ADF rituals of my local grove) so I can't imagine suddenly seeking their help.
I'm sure some people have felt a god grab and shake them out of nowhere but I think in most cases they contact us with soft touches. If I'm not working in, say, a Gaulish mindframe, I'm probably not going to notice the soft touch of Toutatis, you know? If I'm not open to working with that culture I'm not sure any of the gods would really pay me interest, either.

Same Hogfather, then.

Enlightening. Thank you.
