Latest fitness level increase confirmed and consistent.
I've been using pushups to determine my general fitness level (one pushup per level), as some of you might recall. I read somewhere that it is a good yardstick (and exercise!) because doing them properly forces you to work multiple parts of your body, not just your arms, but your legs, shoulders, neck and back.
I tried that 100 pushups routine that was floating around the Internets awhile back, it got big among Digg dweebs because Kevin Rose was huge on it, but I found that it just wasn't for me. I was fit enough to consistently land in the upper level of the scale, but going from not doing any pushups regularly to doing 100 regularly in a single shot just was not going to work for me. It's not a BAD routine, but I had a hard time keeping the schedule right and ultimately I let it wear me out. I think I plateaued somewhere around 58.
Finally around the new year, I felt like I kind of shamed myself into finally kicking this fitness thing into gear, and and so I decided to just work up my own system. Specifically, every week day I just do as many as I possibly can until my body gives out. Other workout components show up from time to time, I added weightlifting to the daily routine awhile back, running and/or swimming happen from time to time, and this works for me. I've lost 35 pounds so far, so another 30 to go and I'll be pretty pleased.
Oh, and for the record. Fitness level is now at 80.
