I am thinking about buying a laptop; Through the university I can buy a Dell Latitude D531, which is an entry-level business laptop. My main thinking behind this is that they come with a 3-year next business day warranty - I gather Dell's warranty cover is pretty good.

What I was wondering is whether it was worth plumping for the medium-spec one over the entry-level. The basic one has an AMD Sempron 3600+ 2.0 Ghz processor, an 80GB HDD, and a 4-cell 32Whr Battery. The medium spec comes with an AMD Turion X2 TK-57 1.9 Ghz, 120GB HDD, and a 6-cell 56Whr battery. They both come with a gig of RAM, but I would spend the extra £20 to upgrade to 2 gig.

With the extra RAM, the basic model is just over £400, and the medium model is just over £500. This will just be a work machine for college - typing, email, internet, possibly some of the stats software I have to use. I am tempted to be cheap and get the basic one - is there any reason why I shouldn't?
