PG: A Day at the Lake

Aug 01, 2006 16:03

Leon dreamily stared out over the lake. “What a gorgeous day.”

“Mmm,” Jaharb replied. He did not appreciate being dragged away from his work by hyper-enthusiastic children. Never mind the fact that Viers wasn’t a child and he hadn’t really been working. In Leon’s words he’d been sulking, which was perfectly not true. Jaharb did not sulk.

Yuliav and Leon were now chattering about the finer points of Austrian chocolate while Viers sunned himself. The conversation topic switched at random (children!) with Leon attempting to drag him into it every so often. Mostly he responded in monosyllables or not at all.

After a while of this Leon was starting to get visibly annoyed. Too bad. He hadn’t wanted to come outside at all-too bright, too cheerful, and too hot.

Leon stretched out on his back, shirt riding up to expose a fair amount of pale stomach. “I’m so lucky I don’t have to worry about getting burned.”

Yuliav giggled and poked at Leon’s bellybutton. “Viers keeps me from burning.”

Leon squirmed everywhere, trying to escape the relentless tickling. “Hey, quit it! I’m going to fall!”

The child had a point. Jaharb suspected Viers had found this place-rocky, sunny, and high up above the water. It looked a little familiar, and he wondered if it was one of the jumping points he had visited with his children on a day off. With a bit of amazement, he realized that long-ago day had been over a hundred years ago.

“You’re brooding again. Stop it,” Leon demanded.

Jaharb gave him an even look and ignored him.

“Remember that talk we had? About doing this not being beneficial to your health?”

He continued to ignore the chattering. Then Leon’s tone changed as he said, “oh dear.”

A moment later Jaharb’s perspective was forcibly changed. He had only an instant to register hands pushing him and another to realize he was falling. He let out a highly inelegant shriek just before the cold water enclosed him, nearly driving the air from his lungs in shock.

Reaching the surface sputtering in fury, he looked up. Leon and Yuliav were each pointing to the other, their faces pictures of innocence. Viers was laughing so hard it looked like he was having trouble remaining standing.

“Is the water as nice as it looks?” Leon called down, smirking.

Jaharb decided he was going to murder the both of them.

But first…

There were two more shocked screeches, and then splashes.

Much better.
