Alicia tightened her grip around the neck of beer bottle and took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. So far everything was going well: she was sitting out on one of the piers with Jennifer, thighs not-quite-but-almost touching, and the night was warm and inviting around them, stars shining down from the cloudless sky. One of the moons was actually rising in front of them, for fuck’s sake. She couldn’t imagine a better romantic setting without violins and candlelight being involved.

And Jennifer looked as if she was finally relaxing a little, the tension that always tightened her pretty face fading away as she sipped her beer and stared out at the ocean. They had traded stories about the latest everyday occurrences of Pegasus craziness, which in Alicia’s case involved helping a group of villagers recapture their sacred giant hamster, and for Jennifer had meant trying to figure out how to remove the dye that had turned Colonel Sheppard and his team bright green.

“I tried to be professional, you know, but Marie kept humming ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green’ every time my back was turned, and you should have seen Rodney’s face -” Jennifer had been nearly gasping with laughter at that point, and it had been good to see her that way, carefree and happy. And maybe Alicia had liked feeling that way too, forgetting her responsibilities and the fact that they were fighting a war in another galaxy.

So if she could just figure out how to make a move, the night would be a total success. She looked sideways at Jennifer. Should she try to hint around the idea first, just to make sure that they were both on the same page? Or say something blunt that could be taken as joke if it turned out they weren’t even reading from the same book?

Before she could make up her mind, Jennifer caught her in the middle of an apparently not-so-sneaky glance, and smiled widely at her. Alicia smiled back shakily, steeling herself, but then only managed to blink when Jennifer leaned forward and kissed her on the mouth, soft and quick.

Alicia gaped at her, and Jennifer drew back, her face flushing red. “Oh. Um. Was that not - it’s just that I thought that this was - uh,” Jennifer said, trailing off into embarrassed silence.

Alicia pulled herself together, trying to assemble some kind of coherent answer from her jumbled thoughts. She’d so rarely run into any good surprises, especially in Pegasus, that it took a while to figure out how to deal with it. “No, no, I mean, yeah, this is definitely a date, it’s just that I wasn’t expecting you to - know that.” And why had she said that out loud?

“Right, I see,” Jennifer said, pressing her lips together. Alicia couldn’t tell if she was pissed off or trying to not to laugh. She stared down at the beer bottle clenched in her hands and tried desperately to think of something to break the awkwardness of the moment, but nothing was coming to her. So much for her seduction skills.

She looked up when she felt Jennifer’s elbow nudge her arm. Jennifer was smiling again, with a wry tilt to her mouth this time.

“So,” Jennifer said, “how about I kiss you again?”

“Yes, do that,” Alicia said gratefully, and grinned when Jennifer laughed at her. She put her beer down on the deck and turned to Jennifer, leaning in this time to press their mouths together, to feel Jennifer’s smile against her own.
