I was heading to the Magic Box in search of some basic supplies, since my stores had been somewhat depleted and I'd never gotten around to replenishing, when I caught sight of a strange figure on the other side of the street and several yards ahead of me.
I took in the weapons, the slender figure...and the red hair? What in the world was Willow doing on her way to the Magic Box with a ton of weapons? I knew she sometimes wanted to kill Anya, but geez.
I quickened my pace but stayed far enough behind that she didn't notice me. I watched her enter the shop and waited a few beats until I could do the same without looking like I was following her.
Nervously, I took a deep breath and opened the door, setting the bell ringing cheerfully, incongruous in the uncomfortable tension of the shop. I slipped inside, noticing the charged atmosphere, the weapons, and Anya's singularly grouchy expression...and suddenly wished I could rewind long enough not to come in here after all. But now I was stuck.
"Uh...hey guys. This looks like a bad time. Maybe I should leave. Okay, bye." My words all tumbled out together.
And then Willow turned towards me and I caught sight of her injured face for the first time.
Abandoning all thoughts of escaping, I stepped towards her and reached out as if to touch her face but pulled my hand back as soon as I realized.
