Character History: Mami’s life was one of ease for many years, and as a human, she rarely wanted for anything. Her parents loved her very much and she them, and as such, she was unaware of any real suffering. That is, not until they got into a car crash that fatally wounded all three. On the brink of dying, however, something appeared in the ruined car window to Mami and offered her a wish, a second chance at life-at a price. The girl was quick to accept the deal the creature, named Kyuubey, made her, in exchange for living the rest of her life fighting against beings that caused despair, called Witches.
Though we don’t know exactly what the wish she made was, we do know it gave Mami a fighting chance against her death, possibly even restored her health completely. What we do know is that she didn’t wish for her parents’ health and they passed away, leaving the girl orphaned. She regretted it, but Mami still upheld her part of the deal. She protected her city from Witches with her newfound powers as a Puella Magi, in obvious fights to the death. However, as difficult a job as it was, she still managed to attend school as she did it. Though, it probably helped that she lived alone, now that her parents were dead and gone.
Completely by accident, Mami saved Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki from a Witch, and then saved them from Homura Akemi-or at least, that’s how it felt like to everyone involved at the time. Right after this, Mami led them to her apartment, and there Kyuubey and she gave them their introduction to the Puella Magi. Kyuubey felt they had potential to be excellent at it and ended up befriending both during this time-and so did Mami. She promised to show them around and to allow them to watch a few of her battles until they decided for their own what they’d do. As much as she wanted someone to work with, she chose to be a good mentor to them and allow the girls to decide for themselves. After all, it was a big decision, and they had a choice. Unlike them, however, she felt that she never had a real choice, just because of the circumstances Kyuubey showed himself to her in. The two girls agreed, intrigued by this offer, and the very next day, Mami began to show them the basics of what she did in her hunt for Witches. The first fight went exactly as planned, almost without a hitch.
The next one, however, didn’t. Madoka and Sayaka came across the Witch before Mami did and while Sayaka and Kyuubey followed it to the heart of the barrier, to make sure it didn’t spawn and hurt any normal humans, Madoka went to find Mami. She managed to and the Puella Magi lead Madoka into the barrier where Homura tried to stop them, and warn her against it.
Mami didn’t heed the warning though.
Instead, she took it as a challenge and cast a ward around Homura, leaving the other Puella Magi in the entrance of the barrier. It was at this point that Madoka told Mami about her intent to become a Puella Magi herself-and that was a relief to the older girl. She had always fought alone, and this was her chance to have another person to depend upon. It was a fantasy and a hope she’d never dreamed of having fulfilled, so it was absolutely thrilling that Madoka wanted to help. Mami cried in absolute joy for a moment, telling Madoka that she was so glad. And then the Witch finally took form. This time, Mami fought against it, but it was much more recklessly than she did before. After a promise to finish it off quickly, she shot the Witch’s small form with her killing blow-but it respawned into something larger. And that something had lots of teeth. She froze up.
Then the Witch bit her head off.
Personality:
Mami’s personality is that of the mother archetype. Gentle, kind and giving, she’s seen as a big sister figure to the other characters, and tries to mentor them. Not only into becoming good Puella Magi, but making the right decision for themselves. This is probably because she felt like she never had a chance to herself, and wanted them to, in true motherly form, have what she had never gotten to experience. And in most cases, she’s successful at this, and always remains composed and mature while she’s doing it. However, just because she acts mature in front of the other girls doesn’t mean that she necessarily is through and through.
To be quite honest, the maturity is a bit of a front-she wants to be a person the other potential Puella Magi feel like they can trust and depend upon. She wants to be a person they always feel safe around, and who knows her stuff. It’s a big pressure on her, but Mami is willing to take it on. She handles the pressure of living by herself and of being in school quite well-but being a Puella Magi is worse than that. Unlike school, she can’t explain what she’s experiencing to a friend, date or even hang out with friends after school, and mentions that she can only cry about it alone. On the same level, however, it’s one of the only things she has left. Her apartment, while very pretty and modern, is very bare. While she has learned to live with it, it doesn’t mean Mami has doesn’t have much else to rely upon but her powers.
And yet another thing that she’s burdened by is her parents’ deaths. Though she’s accepted the fact it happened, and has moved on, she feels somewhat responsible. She made a selfish wish-she didn’t wish for their safety as well as her own when she made her contract. Logically, she knows it’s an honest miracle that she’s alive, but she can’t shake this and as such, has full-heartedly dedicated herself to helping those in need. This goes even to the point that when she found out a Puella Magi’s life leads only to transforming into a Witch in a failed timeline, she became hysterical and killed another contracted girl, telling everyone, “We have to die.” She’s quickly killed by Madoka before she attacks another, but it’s clear that the very knowledge of a Puella Magi’s path is what made her snap. And even then, she was thinking of others before she thought of herself.
Normally, though, Mami is extremely evenly tempered to a fault when in front of others. Her kindness is almost immediately apparent when one meets her, and she often has a serene smile on her face-including when she’s fighting. A peek into her mind at this point would show that her calm pervades through everything, and allows her to fight in a controlled manner. But the second she’s at all distracted, things change. She might still have that smile, but she underestimates her opponent-or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that she doesn’t pay it the attention it deserves. Her caution was far gone when she fought against the Witch that decapitated her. And that was because she was ecstatic.
Extra:
Character Abilities: Mami is capable of transforming herself into a Puella Magi at any time she wishes with the help of her Soul Gem-a yellow gem that takes the form of a silver ring on her middle finger when she goes about her day to day life. In this form, she can materialize as many ornate rifled matchlock muskets as she wants, but in ways that seem to mimic magic tricks, as she often lifts her skirt and they appear to slide out of it or she does a twirl and a flourish and they suddenly appear behind and in front of her. She’s also shown to be capable of using the ribbon around her neck as a lasso and in other ways, as it stretches according to her will. This ribbon can also be used to create another extremely large gun as her finishing move. When outside of her Puella Magi form, however, she has been shown to be able to transform objects into things that could harm Witches, and capable of using ribbon-like techniques without the ribbon in hand, and other small reality bending things. For instance, right after she fights, a teacup and a saucer fall into her hands, but a few moments after she’s died, the teacup appears once more.
Possessions: She has a key to her old apartment in her pocket, her soul gem ring on her finger, and her cell phone, but that’s it, other than the clothes on her back.
Anything else: Though her Puella Magi form is useful, nothing comes without a price, and any girl who has made a contract with the Incubator, Kyuubey, must make sure to constantly purify her Soul Gem with the help of Grief Seeds-"eggs" that are dropped by the Witches they fight. Using magical power takes a very heavy toll on the gem and it quickly dirties it. The Grief Seeds are the only way to clear them. If a gem doesn’t get purified, the girl will fall into despair and become one of the Witches. And though Mami isn’t aware that Soul Gems are the key to changing Puella Magi into Witches, she does know that it’s a very Bad thing to leave her gem unpurified. And as such, will either constantly be wishing for Grief Seeds or we can assume the city itself appeases her gem’s needs.
On top of this, as the Soul Gem literally is the girl’s soul, it cannot be separated from Mami for more than 100 metres. If it is, she will instantly become unresponsive and fall into a state of death-her body will anyway. She’s not aware of this either, but is always careful to keep it on her anyway, just out of habit.

This can be found here! It's an AU What-if setting that supposes Mami wasn't killed by the witch.
Log/Prose sample: To be honest, part of her didn’t expect to feel anything again, but when Mami felt something hard and cold under her, and solid as it could be, her eyes forced themselves open to see what was around her. That, in and of itself, was a bit unexpected. She still had her head. Almost instantly, her mind flickered to something she was almost certain was a memory. It was the witch coming at her with its mouth opening-and its maw was enormous, within moments her entire head was completely surrounded by it. The world went dark, moist and foul. And then, sharp teeth. That was something she absolutely would not be able to forget. The feeling of something digging and cutting into her throat was unbearable and her wide eyes closed out of sheer instinct. She wanted it to just end.
Then the very air around her itself changed. The Puella Magi felt an entire shift. It was still dark, but now it was cooler, calmer, and safer feeling. She was home, in her apartment-almost like Madoka had never sought her out to fight the witch. But there was something different about it, and her gaze almost instantly fell upon it. There was a box at her place on the table, just sitting like it belonged there-and Mami approached it cautiously, her brow wrinkled. She wasn’t sure what to make of this, to be honest. There was something creepy about it, like the feeling something bad was going to or was happening. Or maybe it felt more like someone was changing the things around her. Honestly, she wasn’t sure, but it didn’t feel normal. Slowly, she lowered herself down in front of the box, her mind going at a million miles per hour. What was going on? What had happened to the witch? Or Madoka? Sayaka and Kyuubey too? Even Homura came up in her mind, for just a sliver of a second. Were they going through what she was right now? Almost as suddenly as that thought came into her head, however, she understood that it couldn’t have been true. She was dead. The witch had definitely eaten her head. So what was this? An ascent or was it a descent? Maybe a trial?
And then, Mami realized that the dark box sitting at her place on the table was a music box.
Through the tears that had suddenly started coursing down her cheeks, she had turned the key, opening the box, and watched the little figures dance around inside with a type of fascination that she barely recognized as her own. The next thing the Puella Magi knew, though, she was no longer in her apartment. Though she was still crying now, her attention went elsewhere, and she started to rub the tears away in order to see around her. She was in a grand hall, with marble staircases, pillars and a golden, domed ceiling. And, as she pushed herself to her feet to look around, she caught sight of a key hanging around her throat. This wasn’t Heaven and it wasn’t Hell, Mami realized.
This was some place different.
