It is official: I am going to UMass Medical (Worcester, MA) for graduate school. Do not be confused; it is not just a medical school! They also have a Ph.D. program in "Biological and Biomedical sciences." What's nice is that, since it is a medical school as well, you're next to a hospital, which means you can get primary samples. You also have some MDs who might be interested in helping you out with research in other ways. So, yeah, I'm getting excited.
Something of a down side is that we will have to move. I AM sick of the city, so going somewhere greener, quieter and opener will be nice. However, change is difficult and it makes me anxious. We will have to get a car. We'll have to find an apartment. Somehow, we'll have to move there, even though I will have already started (given the way leases will be ending and starting). For those familiar with MA, we're looking at Natick. The idea that it is somewhat midway for the two of us and it is on the commuter rail, so Gabe can take it into the city, while I drive out to Worcester.
So, while my decision is made and officially announced to schools, I get to watch a few of my fellow lab techs try to figure out what on Earth they'll be doing next year. While I envy some of their options, I don't envy the difficult decisions they're having to make.
